How to Survive Your Own Cooking [Class 1]

"Hello, everyone," Lulu said, smiling softly, as the students came in to the home ec room. "Welcome to How to Survive Your Own Cooking. For those who don't know me, my name is Lulu; you may call me Professor if you wish, but my name will also suffice. I'd also like to take this opportunity to introduce my teaching assistant, Liir."

As people settled in, Lulu passed around the class syllabus. "Today, we're going to start with something rather simple," she said. "First, introductions; it's best that we learn about each other if we're going to be spending a semester together. I'd like you all to share your name, where you're from, and what kind of experience you have cooking."

After the introductions had finished, Lulu gestured to the different food stations. "As you can see," she said, "there are seven stations set up today. At each station, you will find a large salad bowl and a package of romaine lettuce. Divide yourselves into groups of two; each group is responsible for preparing one salad. Instructions on preparing the lettuce are on each package. You should use three different moddable vegetables, a protein, such as bacon or boiled eggs, and a salad dressing, all of which you can find at the front of the room. Dice the vegetables before adding them to the salad -- that means to cut them into square chunks, like this." Lulu grabbed a green pepper from the selection and demonstrated how to dice it, resulting in fairly large chunks. "In some cases, I would recommend saving the pips, the seeds of the pepper, to use in the recipe, but in the case of salads you should discard them.

"Most of all," Lulu continued, as the students divided themselves up, "try to have fun. If you have any questions, feel free to ask."

At the end of the class, as the students tidied up, Lulu said, "Over the course of the next week, I'd like you each to make a salad and share it with one other person. This will be your perfectly handwaveable homework each week -- to make and share what you've made in class. When you come in next week, be prepared to tell us what ingredients you used, and how it was received by the person you shared it with."

[Please to be waiting for OCD is up!]

Michelangelo read the class syllabus, and started bouncing happily in his seat when he read what class six was going to cover.

Sam looked over the syllabus, and tried to think positively, and not focus on what he could screw up.

"M'Yasutora Sado," he introduced himself with a light lift of his hand in a sort of wave. "People call me Chad, though. I, uh, I'm from Japan and Mexico. I've...kinda been on my own for a while, so I have a lot of experience cooking for myself, but I still wanna learn maybe some new things."

Yeah, Lulu's mentioning of being from another world? *That* got Carmela's attention like whoa.

"My name's Carmela Rodriguez, I'm from New York, and um... my cooking skills pretty much end at pasta plus sauce from a can," she shrugs.

"I'm Summer Roberts and I'm from Newport Beach, California," Summer said, introducing herself. "Uh, I don't have a lot of cooking experience. Like at all. Well, I can at least make toast."

"My name is Liir," he said at a clear volume, pronouncing the word slowly. He'd prefer if no one was using him as a verb, really. Not that he really knew what one of those were.

"And I'm from the Land of Oz. Mostly I made up whatever was in the larder once I was old enough and Nanny wasn't able to get around so well. I don't know if any of it tasted good, but it was edible."

Truthful and... reasonable.

Michelangelo did a happy little bounce-wave combo as he stood to introduce himself.

"Hi! I'm Michelangelo, from New York, New York," the urge to break into a song and dance number just for the heck of it was great. But Mikey was strong. He resisted.

Thankfully.

"And most of the cooking that I do involves making pizza. But my pizza gets lots of variety!" He looked thoughtful for a moment. "Though nobody else wants to eat it."

"I'm Sam Winchester, born in Kansas, although I've lived all over. My cooking skills are limited to things like cookies, and the occasional cake. Other than that, I'm kind of hopeless. Kitchens don't like me."

"I'm Shawn, and I come from Seattle... Not really much of a cook, at all. I usually stick with pop tarts, since I can't really screw that up."

"Cassandra," Cassandra said quietly. "I lived in Gotham?" which she hoped was close enough to 'where she was from'.

"I like marshmallows." Which was both true and about the extent of her ability to cook.

"My name's Jenny Sparks. I'm from London, England, but I've lived all over and currently call a transdimensional spacecraft home. I can make tea and toast, and Ronan showed me how to make soup. Really easy soup." And if Lulu could reverse a 108 year trend of setting kitchens on fire, she would have worked a miracle.

Tamaki delicately cleared his throat before rising from his seat to make the introduction.

"My name is Tamaki, I'm from Japan, although I've lived in France, and I have absolutely no cooking experience whatsoever." Despite being completely inexperienced, he smiled while saying so.

"I'm Demyx. I'm from The World That Never Was - really, don't ask," Demyx added quickly, looking shifty. "I didn't name it. They probably did. Anyway! Um, in most of my cooking experiences I manage to set things on fire. And then flood whatever place I'm cooking in." He looked sheepish.

Liir looked around the classroom, hoping someone might need him. He'd rather he was useful to Miss Lulu as opposed to just hanging around looking ragged.
