Applied Inventiontronics, Period 4 - Week 1
"He-hello, class." He smiled sideways at the front of the class and the whole left of his face twitched visibly. "I'm, uh, let's see," he glanced at his notes, "Professor Ambrose? Yes. I'm Professor Ambrose, but you can call me Glitch if you like, heh." He smiled, both sides now.
Glitch set the notes down and fidgeted with his sleeves, then took a deep breath. "Welcome," a flourish, "to Applied Inventiontronics! Here, I'll do my very best to teach you about the intricacies, whys and how-tos of invention. Over the semester, you'll create an invention with the skills you learn in this class for a final grade. I'll provide the materials, if you need them, and answer any questions you have." He was getting into this whole 'teacher' thing.
"Now, uh, my first rule when setting out to invent something is to make sure that it will be helpful to the people around me. That means your first assignment, after everyone introduces themselves of course, is to figure out what someone needs! You can work alone or with a classmate or with a lot of classmates. I've found that it's really much better to bounce ideas like this off other people."
Then he put his hands on his hips and looked out at the class and let his mouth fall into a flat line made purely of seriousness. "Restrictions are, 1) No Weapons. The goal here is to make lives better, not worse. 2) No inventions can rely on hurting others to work." He pointed to his zipper solemnly, as if they'd understand what he meant. "Off limits. 3), uh, three..."
He looked back at his notes, a little panicked, and shuffled the papers around. "Three! Hah!" Glitch held up the notecard in a fist, pumped it into the air once or twice, and smiled triumphantly. "Three!" A pause. "Oh, three." He pulled his arm back and read the piece of paper. "Have... OH!" He brightened. "Have fun! Enjoy your inventions! Or I guess I fail you." He leaned forward on the desk, making the most serious face he could imagine (which only lasted a good fifteen seconds), then smirked. "Well? Get to work!"

Re: Introductions!
Re: Introductions!
"If you like, I can write it up today, maybe add a few notes or starting off points, and you can pick it up in my office tomorrow?"
Re: Introductions!
Re: Introductions!
Glitch thought for a moment, trying to remember what the number of his office was. He couldn't, so, "The door will be open," was the only direction he could give.
Re: Introductions!
And, for some reason, as if it was his business or it might be of interest.
"Terry is taking me out for muffins sometime this week."
Re: Introductions!
"I don't think I've met them, but that's good." He smiled, happy that Liir was sharing with him. "Have you met many other people here?"
Re: Introductions!
"Plenty. I even met one of my professors when I took a flight above the school."
He hadn't told Glitch that the broom flew, but he thought that it might be in the history, considering. Everyone knew the Witch's broom, after all.
"Someone else made me food, Dean, and Lana and Ino said they would try and teach me how to defend myself. Apparently, I fall well."
Re: Introductions!
"You can fly?" It wasn't angry, or accusing. Just honestly curious, and a little bit confused.
He thought of the Witch of the West, and how it was said that she flew on a broomstick. He had always assumed that was just legend, something fanciful in a story. Or maybe a metaphor for something else.
Re: Introductions!
"The broom flies," he said firmly enough, "I just ride on it. Sometimes. Not often, but I wanted to look at the ocean. I've never seen one before."
A pause.
"It was hers. The Witch's."
Re: Introductions!
He smiled, then, at Liir. "I'm sure it takes some talent of your own to fly on it and not fall off."
Re: Introductions!
And his voice was certainly not tight. Certainly not.
Re: Introductions!
He looked at Liir, now, not the broom. "Holding on can be difficult," said with a little more gravity and implied meaning than what was obvious. A smile, then, and a nod. "It's good that you can."
Some of his synapses, toward the back, considered the broom. A gift, almost, from the Scarecrow. They went on pondering gifts, considering them, while they let the rest deal with more forward thinking.
Re: Introductions!
It was probably easier than most things since he understood it so well.
"I keep it with me, mostly in case."
Of anything.
Re: Introductions!
"If you take as quickly to class as you do flying, I'm sure you'll do well."
He meant it. A small encouragement, because starting out in new things could be difficult and his synapses reminded him of that. They reminded him of DG, too, when he first met her in that swinging cage. A little lost and scared and unsure, but she'd found her way eventually.
Glitch hoped, honestly, that he could help Liir find his way here. He might actually do a better job of it with all his brain, too.
Re: Introductions!
Just a nod. He didn't have any words for that kind of thing. Words weren't his specialty.
"I should let you leave the classroom," he said after a moment. "I didn't mean to hold you up."
Re: Introductions!
"It's alright. I'll see you tomorrow, then?"
Glitch quickly made a little note to himself, then, to write down those questions for him.
Re: Introductions!
And there was a certain awkward movement, as if he wanted to do something but didn't know how before he put the broom back where it was supposed to go in the quiver and ran off.
