Applied Inventiontronics, Period 4 - Week 1

"He-hello, class." He smiled sideways at the front of the class and the whole left of his face twitched visibly. "I'm, uh, let's see," he glanced at his notes, "Professor Ambrose? Yes. I'm Professor Ambrose, but you can call me Glitch if you like, heh." He smiled, both sides now.

Glitch set the notes down and fidgeted with his sleeves, then took a deep breath. "Welcome," a flourish, "to Applied Inventiontronics! Here, I'll do my very best to teach you about the intricacies, whys and how-tos of invention. Over the semester, you'll create an invention with the skills you learn in this class for a final grade. I'll provide the materials, if you need them, and answer any questions you have." He was getting into this whole 'teacher' thing.

"Now, uh, my first rule when setting out to invent something is to make sure that it will be helpful to the people around me. That means your first assignment, after everyone introduces themselves of course, is to figure out what someone needs! You can work alone or with a classmate or with a lot of classmates. I've found that it's really much better to bounce ideas like this off other people."

Then he put his hands on his hips and looked out at the class and let his mouth fall into a flat line made purely of seriousness. "Restrictions are, 1) No Weapons. The goal here is to make lives better, not worse. 2) No inventions can rely on hurting others to work." He pointed to his zipper solemnly, as if they'd understand what he meant. "Off limits. 3), uh, three..."

He looked back at his notes, a little panicked, and shuffled the papers around. "Three! Hah!" Glitch held up the notecard in a fist, pumped it into the air once or twice, and smiled triumphantly. "Three!" A pause. "Oh, three." He pulled his arm back and read the piece of paper. "Have... OH!" He brightened. "Have fun! Enjoy your inventions! Or I guess I fail you." He leaned forward on the desk, making the most serious face he could imagine (which only lasted a good fifteen seconds), then smirked. "Well? Get to work!"

After her conversation with Peter last night Willow began brainstorming about an invention to help beavers make tea.

Andrew got down to some heavy duty doodling, covering the page in little stick figure men with various flaming contraptions strapped to their backs. "Jet packs are so cool," Andrew said to himself.

He had no clue how you might go about actually building one.

As Sokka looked around for a partner, he wondered if he could maybe invent something to cause an eclipse any time you wanted, if Glitch didn't realize it was meant to be used as a weapon.

He couldn't think of anything to make. That was plain on his face.

Necessity was the mother of invention, but he had very little experience with mothers and while there were a great many things he needed, there wasn't anything he could figure a tick-tock could do to provide it. No matter what kind of tick-tock it was, it couldn't make him new clothes or new shoes. It couldn't feed people, not without something to make the food with. As for making some task easier, he didn't particular have any tasks.

Well, finding Nor. And if he was honest with himself, he had to figure out how to make a woman back into an Elephant. But that was magic, and far far beyond him.

Huh.

Uhh....A.J. had a sketchpad out and a pencil, but the pencil was doing more nervous tapping on the sketchpad than doodling or scribbling on it.

Wouldn't it figure? Half the time when he was doing something, he had so many idea going through his mind that he couldn't even keep them straight. And then when he was supposed to think of something, his mind was just completely blank.

Dammit.

"Oh." A.J. blinked at his blank sketchpad. "Oh, okay. Uh, good!" He chuckled a little. "Yesterday, I probably would have had fifty million things. Today's just..." he moved his hands as if dropping something splattery onto the desk, with an accompanying sound effect. "Nothin'."

"Oh, yeah, definitely," A.J.'s head bobbed some more with a small grin. Even mentioning talking to friends did get a few gears going in his head, but they might be stupid ideas, so he wasn't say anything. "Thanks, Professor."

Jaina was trying to come up with things that she thought would be useful. She really thought it was a bad sign that half of what she came up with were weapons, or ways to counter them.

She was going to think harder on the light and fluffy side of things.

Doom began sketching schematics for propulsion boots. Not jet or rocket boots, for those have been done... by him... and they used conventional fuels, which were boring. All he needed to do was work out a usable alternative fuel source.

Rikku thought for a long time, and then started coming up with different machina that could travel some of the more difficult distances in Spira that they had covered on foot. Something fiend-proof, would be good.
