"That's different," Isabel said, raising an eyebrow. "Pretty neat actually."

Deciding to put aside her worries about Michael and what she hadn't told him till later, she smiled. "Hi. I'm guessing you're a newbie?"

"That'd be right," Jen said, masking her curiosity and giving the girl a polite, if not outright friendly, nod. "Considering you look pretty comfortable around here, I'm guessing you're not?"

"Far from it," Isabel laughed. "I've been here for two years. So I'm an old hand at this place. Of course having said that, I'm just guaranteed that something weird is going to happen that I've never seen before."

"Pretty much," she shrugged. "Between trolls, snow monsters, jello dragons and just the random day to day weirdness, sometimes I feel like I have seen a lot."

"Monsters," Jen repeated. "This place . . . gets attacked a lot?"

"Every couple months something comes by and needs it's ass kicked," Isabel explained. "We usually do that pretty easily." Except the plague. That one almost won.

"A bunch of schoolkids?" Maybe it was unfair of her, considering some of what she knew of her own dimension's history, but given that something seemed to be out of the ordinary about this girl, she could well be underestimating these schoolkids. Dean had certainly seemed pretty capable.

She could only imagine how it sounded to someone who hadn't been there. "I know, it sounds crazy. But this is a pretty unique place. So the people that come here are pretty unique as well."

"From what I can tell of the place so far, that's true on several levels," Jen remarked. "Is it the same with the people?"

"Pretty much. We've got a good mix of wizards, witches, superheroes, aliens, mutants and just plain regular people," Isabel smiled. "It's never boring."

The first part of the list was met with a little bit of surprise but no disbelief, but toward the end Jen's shoulders tensed, and she raised her head to look straight at Isabel. "Mutants?"

"You say that like it's a bad thing," she noted. "They're people just like you and me. Just with a little bit extra."

She'd seen Ransik turn himself in, and Nadira make a complete turnaround, but that wasn't quite enough to overcome a lifetime of conditioning in the belief that mutants were something sub-human and irredeemable.

Jen shook her head slowly. "Not the mutants I'm used to."

"Oh? How so?" Isabel asked, curious.

After a year in 2001, Jen's perspective on her own time had definitely changed. Was there any way that this could possibly not sound disturbing?

"Mutants where I'm from," she said slowly, "are what happens when the . . . genetic customization process goes wrong. A flawed product."

The conversation was serious, but Isabel couldn't help but ask a potentially stupid question. "Does anyone in the future actually have kids the old fashioned way?" She couldn't help but think of Jack and what had happened to him.

"Not usually," Jen admitted. "If they can't afford the procedure, probably, otherwise that's pretty much just for . . . recreational purposes."

"That's just weird," said the girl that was created out of abducted human DNA and alien essence who didn't even know if she could have kids, future potential children not withstanding.

"I know. It sounds pretty wrong, doesn't it?" asked Jen. "It's supposed to be an ideal society, but . . ."

"It's certainly not my ideal," Isabel admitted. She shook her head, glad she was here and now and had no plans to visit the future.

"So anyway, I never introduced myself. I'm Isabel Evans, a senior, from Roswell."

Jen wouldn't recommend it anyway. The commute was hell.

"Jen Scotts," she replied. "Junior, handwavey future city of vagueness la la, year 3000."

She paused. "Roswell? As in that Roswell?"

"That Roswell," she nodded, a bit sheepishly. "I mentioned that some students were aliens? You're looking at one."

"A lot of the scholars in my time insisted that all the stories about Roswell were folk tales," Jen remarked. "No wonder you gave off an interesting reading on my scanner, then."

"We covered our tracks well then." Hopefully at least from this point in time. "We just want to be left alone to live our lives. At this point my biggest concern is getting into college and what I'm going to get my boyfriend for his birthday."
