Romeo made a sympathetic noise. "Skiiing is a challenge," he said. "A good way to freeze one's body near off. I prefer to stay warm."

"Me, too. It was my boyfriend's idea to go. But there was plenty of lodge time to make up for the pain that came with learning how to ski."

Andrew tilted his head. "Have you skied often?"

"Not often. My father had a home in the mountains." This was said with the tone of one to whom such an indulgence was nothing. "You have a boyfriend?"

Andrew noted the tone, he had heard it plenty back in Sunnydale. "Um, I did. His mother got sick so he had to leave school." Andrew's shoulders slumped. "He hasn't been gone a week yet, but he's not coming back. I guess that means I'm single."

"It is sad to lose a love," Romeo commiserated. "My wife has been gone six months, and some days she is all I think on."

"You're married?" Andrew was surprised as he seemed really young. "Did she go away to another school?"

"I was. She died," Romeo said quietly. He wasn't eager to go into much more detail on the gory specifics, but if Andrew asked, he would explain it. "Our families have been in a conflict, and we believed it would end that and permit us to be together."

Andrew took a tentative step towards Romeo, but stopped. "I'm sorry," he said softly. "I know how little words can help, but if you ever want to talk about it..." He left it at that.

Romeo shrugged one shoulder. "She was my sun, my moon, my life," he said. "No one shall ever take her place, nor could they. Did you feel so for your friend?"

"For Neil?" Andrew thought about it. "He was my first. I'll never forget him, but I think, um, I think it's different. It's not like he's gone gone, just gone from my life. And I think he'll find happiness where he is."

"That so seldom helps those of us left behind," Romeo mused. "I thought I had loved before Juliet, but I was wrong."

Andrew reached out to place a hand on Romeo's shoulder. "There, there," he said. "They say time heals all wounds." Andrew kind of hated himself for saying that. After Bart passed away, he reached a point where all the platitudes just started to make him angry.

"That they do, but then, they say a good many things, many of them foolish," Romeo pointed out. "But for the intent, I thank you."

Andrew nodded. "If you ever feel like talking, I'm pretty easy to find," Andrew said.
