Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

Isabel's always known that stumbling across another version of someone from another Roswell was a possibility while she was in Fandom. And she knows it's not her Michael. Not with that spiky hair. Her Michael, when she said good-bye to him last week had been desperately in need of a haircut to keep it out of his eyes.

She can't help wondering when he's from. Has Liz been shot yet? What about Hank? What about Alex?

Knowing what she knows now about Hank, and about what Michael went through when they were younger, it's all Isabel can do to keep from hugging him. But still she held back, she knew he was going to want an explanation and she's not sure she'll be able to give him one. There's a tiny voice in her head that sounds suspiciously like Jack warning her about timelines and messing things up.

For moment she toyed with the idea of walking away and approaching him later, away from the crowds.

He doesn't see her for a moment, but then he happens to glance her way... and stops, blinking.

"...Izzy?"

"Hi Michael," she said, giving him a warm smile. Because another reality or not, he's still her brother and that's all that matters.

"Welcome to Fandom."

"I didn't... how are you here?"

He's glad to see her, though, obviously.

"That's, well, that's a bit of story," Isabel replied. "It's going to sound strange. But I swear, I'm not lying. I wouldn't lie to you." And boy she hopes that promise won't come back to bite her in the ass.

"Fandom's a weird place. I've been calling it a nexus of weird myself. People from all times, and lots of different places wind up going to school here. You're what? About fifteen? Sixteen? I'm almost nineteen now. I've been here for two years." As far as explanations go? It probably left Michael with more questions then answers Isabel realized but she was still too busy trying to get used to the idea of him being here to think clearly.

"Just sixteen", he tells her, blinking. "Couple months ago... you're nineteen?"

Technically she was already if she counted the time spent on Antar, but Isabel wasn't about to explain that to Michael. Not now, maybe not ever. "I will be in April. Things happened for me, for us, that I'm guessing haven't happened for you. You, Max and well, your Isabel, you're the only ones that know the truth right? No one else?"

"...right." He gives her a slightly wary look at that. "Like we agreed."

"Like we agreed," she nodded, mentally facepalming. Michael was going to flip when he found out that pretty much everyone in Fandom knew the truth about her.

"The thing is, stuff did happen. I can't tell you what because that could potentially mess up the timeline." Although really? Michael being in Fandom was already a huge change from the way things happened in her reality. "I know it sounds like some bad movie plot, but it's the truth. Anyway, I came here because I wanted to get away for awhile. And I haven't left yet. I think, once you get over the brain breakage, you'll like it here. It's safe here." Both from the Special Unit and from Hank.

"Safe." The look turns dubious. "You think so? Really?"

He's not sure he knows what that's like.

"Absolutely," Isabel promised. "They do a good job of looking out for the students here. Although to be honest, we look out for each other. I've made some good friends here. I think you will to if you give it a chance."

"Hey, who needs other friends when I've got you and Maxwell? 'specially when I'll only leave."

It's not that Isabel had forgotten how eager Michael had been to leave three years ago, or how innocent they'd all been about what was going to happen, and what they would face; but seeing it here in front of her, especially after the last year hurt. Isa bel bit her lip and looked away.

"You'd be surprised Michael," she said quietly. "You'd be surprised."

He gives her a worried look, but doesn't question it. To be honest, he doesn't want to know.

"So... any tips?"

Grateful for the change in topic, but aware that they were going to have to talk at some point, she smiled.

"Avoid the gremlins," Isabel told him. "They're small ugly critters about that high. Bad, usually embarrassing, things happen if they bite you. The squirrels are huge gossips which you'll find out if you listen to radio. J,GoB makes the best baked goods in town and I'm in room 410. You're welcome to stop by anytime."

The list of things she didn't tell him about? Huge.

"...I don't usually let anything bite me, but I'll remember that. What sort of bad things?" He nods to the latter part. "I'm in 512 with some girl called Brooke. Same goes for you."

"Hallucinations usually," Isabel explained. "You'll think you're something, or someone completely different. I've seen friends thinking they were those two magicians from Vegas, you know, the ones with the glitter and the tigers? It was hilarious. So you can see why I say embarrassing."

"Brooke? I don't remember hearing that name before. She must be new," she said thoughtfully. "I roomed with Xander when I first got here. He was cool. He lives in town now but we still hang out. Fortunately I haven't had a roommate since, which is kind of nice. I like my privacy."

"...yeah. Am I allowed to kill the gremlins?" He's serious, though he won't if she says not. "Privacy's good, yeah. How'd you get away with no roommate?"

"If you're directly threatened? Yeah, you can," she nodded. "But don't go hunting for them. Then they get pissed and really attack."

"Blind luck mostly. I think the office lost my room paperwork. If things don't work out with Brooke I'm pretty sure you'll be allowed to switch after two weeks."

"Huh. Okay, I'll remember that - and we'll see about Brooke. Hope she's not some dumb blonde."

"Excuse me?" Isabel said, crossing her arms and raising an eyebrow. "I'd be careful saying stuff like that. There's a lot of girls around here that would kick your butt for it and not break a sweat."

"I didn't mean you, Iz", he says with a disarming smile. "And those girls can't be so dumb, can they?"

"Very far from it," she told him with a grin. "You're going to be very surprised."

"Heh. Looking forward to it."

"So shall I leave you to mingle?" Isabel asked. "Or are you going to just go get settled in your room?"
