"Ewwww." Rikku shivered. "That's horrible. Although I guess it's less horrible if she was, like, evil? But still horrible. You know?"

Amber nodded. "It was horrible but by then the whole town was sort of used to violent deaths. It's a long story. Becky's mom is the one who is after me now. I don't think she'll find me."

"I know that feeling," Rikku said, shrugging a little awkwardly. "The, uh. You get used to violent deaths. Kinda wish you weren't, you know? It's ... it's okay. It's pretty safe here. If she showed up, she'd have all of us to deal with. We pull together for stuff like that, you know?"

"I work, or worked, in a morgue, so deaths really don't affect me other than I hope I'm not one of the cadavers I'm paiting a face on, you know? Oh gosh," she nodded, brows raised. "Not that I could paint my own face if I'm dead. But you know..."

She perked up. "Oh, my gosh! That is great! I love when schools are like this. Makes it easy to go to bed at night."

"Yeah, totally," Rikku said, shaking off her distraction. "I don't know if there's a morgue in town, you might have to work somewhere else. I'm at the weapons-and-meditation place, which doesn't sound like it'd work but somehow it does. Uh. When schools are like what?"

"I'd rather not go back to work at a morgue; I always went home smelling funny," Amber said.

"When everyone pulls together to keep everyone safe. I've only seen schools like that on TV shows, but I think they're great."

"I'd think it'd be kinda sad, too," Rikku said, shivering. "Just ... around dead people all the time. Hard to move on when they're right there. Oh, man, I love TV. We don't have it back home. We don't have anything interesting, back home. Back home kinda sucks."

Amber noticed the shivering. "Are you cold, Rikku?" It seemed like a rather pleasant day. "Dead people are not fun. Especially when you have to make them up to look like they've just come in from a frosty day outdoors. Kinda sucks." She sighed. "I'm sorry your home sucks. Mine kind of does too though I don't like to complain too much. Loretta says it'll give me lines and drive me to smoke. Like she should talk."

"A little," she said quickly. "I, uh, grew up in the desert. Not used to this whole winter stuff. And this place makes a good home. I kinda think I'm not going back, you know? There's nothing there. No point to it."

"If I had an extra jacket on me, I'd let you borrow it," she said kindly. "And... you have no family, Rikku?"

"I'm okay," she laughed. "Thank you. It's cool. I usually bounce enough that it doesn't matter. It's my fault for not bothering with a coat. Not like I can glare at the weather till it warms up again, you know?"

She hesitated. "Pops is there, and the rest of the Al Bhed, all just ... living on the airship. My, uh, home is kinda ... gone. There was bad stuff and the whole city ..." She waved vaguely. "Depressing stuff. Doesn't matter. I'll write, I just ... like it better here. Nobody hates us or whatever, you know?"

(I'm gonna be away for a bit, is SP okay?)

"I know," Amber agreed. "Sometimes I've glared at the weather until I realize I can't change it."

Rikku's home sounded kind of sad and Amber didn't want to bring her down about it. "I hope I grow to like it here just as much as you do. I bet you have lots of friends here, huh?"

"You bet!" Rikku said, bouncing on her toes again. "This place is great. The people are awesome. And the classes are ... tooootally not what I expected. But in a good way. They're crazy, you know? But I kinda like the serious ones, too. That's why I'm here."
