Hoshi usually avoided crowds. Today, though, she was feeling a bit more confident about her ability to deal with it and she did want to get out there to meet some of the new students. She grabbed a soda and stood a little bit away from where everyone else was gathered since old habits died hard.

"Happy new year, Robin," said Hoshi, smiling warmly. "How was your winter break?"

"Oh it was great! My family all got together a few days before Christmas for presents and stuff, and then I went with my Uncle Kermit to a big party out in the country. How was yours?"

"It was interesting," said Hoshi. "I made a new friend who is a shuttle pilot, so he can take me home and back. But my family... Something very strange was going on with them and it has me worried."

"Oh no," Robin said, concerned. "Is everyone all right?"

"Yeah, they're all find. It's just that my uncle seems to have gotten involved with some weird people, and they're influencing the whole family's attitudes towards non-humans," explained Hoshi.

"Uhm, influencing them how?" Robin asked. He didn't want to make her uncomfortable, but he kinda wanted to know. Being non-human himself.

"Well," said Hoshi, "when I got to the door, my little brother pulled a toy pistol on me and told me that I wasn't allowed inside if I had been consorting with aliens. Then my mother grilled me on whether or not the other students here are all human."

Robin's mouth hung open for a minute. "Woah. I'm not sure half the students here are human."

Hoshi was ashamed of her mother for having such an attitude. "Well, luckily she only knows of one alien species so I wasn't lying to her when I said that there were no Vulcans in Fandom. But it was awful. Uncle Kenzo told us he was taking us kids to San Francisco for the day, and then it turned out that he was going to some protest rally outside the Vulcan embassy. It just doesn't sound like the world I left behind when I first came to Fandom," she said.

Meep. Robin remembered all to well how much it hurt to be discriminated against. He still couldn't look at anything pink without shuddering. "Well the important thing is you're back where things are...well maybe sane isn't the right word."

"Thank goodness for that. Fandom seems a little bit more sane than what I left behind," said Hoshi. "You should drop by my room sometime. I brought you a present from Japan."

Robin gave an excited bounce. "I'll definitely stop by then!" he said.
