The Danger Shop was a bare room with a large cage in the center of it. There was a man that looked remarkably like Seely.

"Good evening," John said to the class once everyone was there. "Welcome to your final exam.

"Last week we talked about the danger within. For your final you're going to get to interact with one of those past dangers. Angel here," John gestured at the man in the cage, "is a former student. He is also a vampire. He has a soul, so generally, all that usually means is you're probably not going to want to share his lunch and he won't be joining you for any picnics on a sunny day. But there are times...."

John pressed a button on the remote and the lighting dimmed, smoke and fire appeared in braziers at the four corners of the cage and a disembodied voice chanted in another language. This seemed to make John pause for a second and he stared. "Damn drama queen," he muttered under his breath.

Aloud he said, "There are times when the soul goes walkabout and what you're left with is the closest thing to pure evil I've encountered outside of pure demon.

"Now evil can wear a pretty face, and use pretty words just as easily as foul ones. But its always going to prey on your weaknesses, make you try and doubt yourself and others, break you down. Your final is to face down evil while trying to not let it get the better of you."

"You're asking the wrong guy to encourage that instinct," Angelus told him. "'course a little fight does make it interesting."

"You've asking the wrong guy for a fight," Valentine replied smoothly, looking straight into that face and unable to discern anything at all. "Normally, when danger rears its ugly head, I'm miles away in the other direction by now."

"A sense of self-preservation," Angelus observed. "Nice."

"I'll never deny that I'm a coward," Valentine sniffed. "But I'm still an alive coward."

"Absolutely no wisdom in being a hero," Angelus agreed.

"No point in getting yourself killed when all it will accomplish is one less head to count come census time." Valentine shrugged his shoulders. "I've been close enough to nonexistent before, I'm in no hurry to repeat the experience."

"Existentially or were you a black, gay Republican?" Angelus asked.

"I have no idea what in the world you just asked." Valentine stared at Angelus for a moment, looking rather confused. This was obviously some real-world jargon that he would never comprehend. "The world folded up. Everything went dark."

"Ahhhh." Angelus nodded. Luckily he spoke Dru. "Stars say anything interesting lately?"

"No?" Valentine was going a great deal more staring, now. "Should they be?"

"I'm not the one turning the planet into a thousand paper cranes," Angelus replied. He tended to have a wee bit more patience when he was the one who caused the insanity.

"Just one, really. I think. In a wastepaper basket, and lit on fire." Valentine crossed his arms and shook his head. "And not this planet, either. Obviously. More like a drawing on a girl's bedroom wall. I think."

"Obviously," Angelus replied.

"You think I'm absolutely daft, don't you?" This was going rather well, really.

"Oh no," Angelus replied. He knew it.

"Oh. Well, good then." Valentine looked about the room somewhat indignantly. "I should hate to think that I'm the crazy one, given that I'm the one on the outside of the cage at the moment."

Valentine sometimes had his gloriously brilliant moments. This probably wasn't one of them.

"And as everyone knows, putting me in a cage renders me harmless," Angelus replied.

"I didn't say that," Valentine stated. "But it might give me a head start."

"Feel free to take advantage of that any year now," Angelus told him.

....

"Oh. Right."

This was Valentine, inching away from the cage, now.

He was so very swift, wasn't he?
