The Danger Shop was a bare room with a large cage in the center of it. There was a man that looked remarkably like Seely.

"Good evening," John said to the class once everyone was there. "Welcome to your final exam.

"Last week we talked about the danger within. For your final you're going to get to interact with one of those past dangers. Angel here," John gestured at the man in the cage, "is a former student. He is also a vampire. He has a soul, so generally, all that usually means is you're probably not going to want to share his lunch and he won't be joining you for any picnics on a sunny day. But there are times...."

John pressed a button on the remote and the lighting dimmed, smoke and fire appeared in braziers at the four corners of the cage and a disembodied voice chanted in another language. This seemed to make John pause for a second and he stared. "Damn drama queen," he muttered under his breath.

Aloud he said, "There are times when the soul goes walkabout and what you're left with is the closest thing to pure evil I've encountered outside of pure demon.

"Now evil can wear a pretty face, and use pretty words just as easily as foul ones. But its always going to prey on your weaknesses, make you try and doubt yourself and others, break you down. Your final is to face down evil while trying to not let it get the better of you."

Karal approached cautiously, Altra's long ago admonition of he's a demon ringing loud in his memory. "Hello, again."

"Kevin, right?" Angelus replied.

"You can call me that," he decided. It would do no harm not to hand his true name over, even if it was only an exercise.

"I'm probably not going to limit myself on what I call you."

"That is your choice," he said quietly, feeling unaccountably twitchy. He really wished Altra were here. "It was kind of you to allow yourself to be caged for our benefit."

"I'll be sure to pass that on to soul boy when I see him," Angelus replied. "I may phrase the message as a strong desire for him to stay dead."

"Which is only to be expected from a demon." He folded his arms, and may have rested his fingers briefly against his Vkandis medal for reassurance. "It is a pity that you can't appreciate the gift that has been given to him."

"You'd think calling it a curse would clue people in," Angelus said, as though to himself. "And yet..."

"Well, you would think so wouldn't you? But you're a demon, and your opinion really doesn't count."

"I'm all torn up about that inside, really."

"Yes, I can see that you're devastated," he said with a small smile. "But it doesn't have to be this way. Even without a soul, you could choose not to do evil. It's not beyond you, if you desired it enough."

"A) stunning lack of anything that would be in it for me," Angelus said. "B)pure evil. This should not be difficult for even a talking monkey to grasp."

"Vkandis knows, the things you would gain are bit beyond your ability to grasp right now, but are you're saying you lack free will?" he asked. "Because that would make you little better than an animal."

"Heck no," Angelus said, "I have plenty of choice in the many variations my pure evil can form. Sometimes I'm even nice enough to make a kill quick. Relatively."

Sunlord. Karal supressed a shudder. "Choosing to kill quickly is merciful, and that is a start," he said earnestly, leaning forward a little. "If you have free will, then that means you don't have to be evil if you don't wish to be."

"Still not quite getting pure evil, are we?" Angelus asked. "Honest. We're not even talking 99.44%. All the way. Right here."

"I refuse to believe that. Pure evil would have no cause to be merciful."

"Wouldn't call it mercy so much as a ratio of my hunger to amusement value."

He went a little pale. "Oh."

"Glad we cleared that up."

"I don't accept that you have no choice to be evil, but I accept that you've chosen to believe that. It's a cowards choice, but everything with free will decides their own path," he said after a long moment of silence. "You have my pity. I'll pray to Vkandis that your destruction will come soon and be quick and merciful."

"Thanks," Angelus replied. "If I prayed - which, let's face it, that's not a phone call that'd be getting answered - but if I did, I think I'd see you in something that finds a way to combine knives, a religious symbol of your choice, and... poodles."
