"I understand you are all looking forward to your finals next week." Mohinder moved from behind his desk as he looked around the classroom. "And I wish you all luck with that."

"But first, the fine art of persuasion," continued Mohinder, eyes bright. "Of influencing others without force, of changing their minds, adopting our ideas as our own. Stating a position, advocating it and amending your argument in response to your audience."

He continued in a similar vein, concentrating on rhetoric and logic as communication tactics, handing out a candy bar to each student before concluding - "In all this it is imperative to know your audience. To know whether they will be swayed by the rhetoric or logic of your arguments, by an appeal to their emotion or by seduction - literal or not - to your way of thinking."

Mohinder perched on the front of his desk and shrugged, "Fear can be a powerful motivator, but it's one unlikely to persuade a friend to choose pizza over take-out.

"How would you influence each other? Is your weakness logical or emotional appeals?" Mohinder pointed at the chocolate he'd passed out. "Can you persuade your neighbour to give up their sweets?"

Chris was very carefully avoiding eye contact with everyone. He had his face buried in his hands and, though he was listening to the lecture, he wasn't taking notes.

"Did you find your cows?" asked a poker-faced Hoshi.

Chris thumped his head off his desk and whimpered.

Summer considered yelling at Chris, but she knew he wasn't himself yesterday. Also, they were in class. So she just kind of shook her head at him somewhat sympathetically.

"I'm sorry," Chris whispered when he caught Summer looking at him.

"Good. You should be," Summer replied. Then she softened a bit. "You weren't yourself. I know that."

"Not even a little," Chris agreed, rubbing his temples.

Summer was now looking even more sympathetic. "It'll be okay."

Summer had no words for that. Instead, she simply patted Chris's arm.

"I'm really, really sorry," he apologized again.

Summer gave him a small smile. "It's okay. You'll just have to make a lot of coffee to make up for it."

Jack was listening half-heartedly, doodling in his notes.

Carmela listens thoughtfully. Last time she'd done something like this, it had been convincing the Tawulf to take the chocolate, not to give it to her. As she listens, she examines the chocolate bar carefully. The wrapper's in nice condition, there's a high cocoa content... all in all, if she manages to hang on to it, it might make a nice bribe one day if she finds herself offplanet again.
