15 Ways to Protect Yourself and Others: Week 13, Period 3

For some reason that would probably be explained, class was held in the Home Ec room today. When the class arrived, five of the 'kitchen stations' were set up with food and several copies of a fat book.

Aly was sitting on one of the tables away from the food, looking slightly amused. "Good morning everybody," she said once they were all assembled. "When the class started, I warned you that my idea of protection might not be completely the same as everyone else's, and this class is going to be a good example of that."

She waved over the array of kitchen stations. "Some of you probably know how to cook. Some of you wouldn't have the least idea in the world. Today, hopefully, that second group is going to change a bit. Because sometimes protecting someone means feeding them and making sure they have energy for the next day. There should be a copy of that cookbook for everyone to take with them. It's nothing fancy. I can barely cook so I'm not giving you Julia Child or anything here."

"Your task for today is to work with a group or by yourself and make something edible out of the ingredients at your table. Then share it amongst your classmates. Breakfast being the most important meal of the day and all."

"Any questions? I don't want any of you leaving before letting me try a bite or a piece of what you make."

She'd been there, Zuko knew that too and it was time for him to show that it did mean a lot to him. He showed up a little early for class and was grateful to find Aly already inside the classroom.

"Sensei," he said softly as he shuffled inside the room.

Aly looked up with surprise. "Zuko! Did they let you out or did you escape?"

"I was let out," he replied and then apparently seemed to decide it was the good time to do this as he stepped forward to hug her.

Aly stared but at least the hug meant she could see if the fever was gone. And it was so she hugged him back gently. "I'm so glad."

His arms tightened around her, seemingly unaware of her confusion. "Thank you," he whispered.

Zuko pulled back after a moment, looking relaxed. "You came."

"Of course," Aly said, eyes searching his face. "You're my student."

Josh loitered in the doorway, holding two mugs of coffee and two donuts.

There had been three donuts, but he'd gotten hungry.

"Ooh, my saviour of not making me eat the students' food!" Aly exclaimed when she saw him.

"That's exactly why I did it," Josh said, leaning in for a kiss. "Morning."

"And that makes you fantastic," she laughed, kissing him back.

"And extremely good looking," Josh added when he finally pulled back, handing Aly her the share of the treats.

"Yes, your attractiveness is in direct proportion to the amount of sugar you're carrying," Aly agreed, managing to keep a straight face.

"Remind me to look into getting a bag of the stuff to hang around my neck," Josh teased, taking a sip from his mug.

She chuckled. "Like a feeder bag? That would be quite the look with your suits."

Jaina was going to have to have this conversation three times this week, and wasn't looking forward to it. At least she figured between the mask and cap, it was its own explanation. "I missed last week," she said. "Is there anything I need to make up?"

Aly looked at Jaina with worried eyes. "You've had survival training, right? That's all we went through."

"I'm definitely good there," Jaina answered honestly.

"Somehow I thought so," Aly said wryly. "Had a hard trip home? Or did I completely miss an invasion."

"The first thing. It looks worse than it is, I promise," she said. "Might be good as new by next week for all I know."

Aly nodded, not quite sure she believed her. "Good. I hope it is then. You want to join up with someone to work today or try it on your own?"

"Honestly, it's going to end up as food poisoning either way," Jaina said bluntly. "Might as well go it alone and save someone else's grade."
