English & Honors English
OOC: As I mentioned in
fandomhigh_ooc, all of the English classes are in a strange sort of magic time whereupon this class could be elapsing on just about any day for your character. Please don't think about it too much. If you do, your brain might break into a thousand pieces -- and that would be bad. Very bad indeed. I'm also breaking this post into two comment threads for English and Honors English alike, as both classes have more or less the same things.
English / Honors English :: Day One
The English classroom at first glance appears to be one of those Places That Time Forgot -- upon entering, the first thing that's instantly visible are stacks and stacks of books, all of which are .... well, stacked not so neatly upon the floor. Rows of desks are set up somewhat haphazardly through the room for students to sit at -- and at the very front of the room is a large teacher's desk, which the professor is currently sitting upon.
Behind the teacher's desk, there is one large window which seems to indicate that the outside day is, in fact, a wintry December evening, an image distinctively at odds with the fall day that the students have no doubt just come in from. As the students file into the room, Jenny bounds to her feet. "Um, hello! My name is, um, Jennifer Schecter, but you can call me Jenny. I'm, um, going to be teaching you all English this year. Well, the English language, I mean. How to use the English language better, I mean, because of course you all already know how to speak English, or you wouldn't be here, right?
"And, um, anyway? I know it's the first day of classes, but I think it would be a good idea for us to get to know each other, so, um, I'd like you all to fill this sheet out and return it to me by the end of the class period. Um. If you like, you can discuss the results with one another, because I think it's really crucial for us to get to know each other so we can realize how interrelated we all are, and this is the fastest way for us to, um, really get to realize what kindred spirits we all are to one another." And then she gets up and starts passing out the worksheets.

Death is: An anthropomorphic personification in the form a of a seven-foot tall skeleton on a pale horse.
Love is: Something you get in books.
The soul is: An interesting philosophical concept, and also the part of the body that thinks and feels.
My opinion on the similarities and differences between Theodore Geisel (pen name Dr. Seuss) and Ernest Hemingway (pen name Ernest Hemingway), especially as pertaining to the post-post-post-post-post modernist literary movement is:
Neither of these are writeres on the Disc, so I can't answer the question until I've had time to go to the library, read both authors, and study the post-modernist literary movement.

Age: Fifteen and three tenths.
Sex: I'm a girl.
I am taking this class because: I like language and it's nice to learn how to use it. I also like to read.
My favorite book is: What They Don't Want You To Know: an Encyclopedia of Cover-Ups and Conspiracies. I know it's not fiction but I think it's very informative.

Love is: What makes me really happy when my father makes me a cake for my birthday, even though sometimes it's a bit overcooked and the knife gets stuck in it.
The soul is: The part of you that goes on existing after your body dies.
My opinion on the similarities and differences between Theodore Geisel (pen name Dr. Seuss) and Ernest Hemingway (pen name Ernest Hemingway), especially as pertaining to the post-post-post-post-post modernist literary movement is: Dr. Seuss had some very nice ideas and his poems always scan properly, so he put things together well. Mr. Hemingway had ideas about Jesus being a fish, which would be interesting if he'd constructed his sentences better.

My favorite book is:
1984Farenheit 451Death is: ... the opposite of life?

My opinion on the similarities and differences between Theodore Geisel (pen name Dr. Seuss) and Ernest Hemingway (pen name Ernest Hemingway), especially as pertaining to the post-post-post-post-post modernist literary movement is: Both had a gift for ... er ... reducing a work of literary merit to the lowest common denominator of words. Also, they're both highly overrated.

Death is: Death is what my father comes close to every day but somehow manages to avoid.

I am taking this class because: It gives me an outlet, I suppose. I've had so many convoluted thoughts these past few months.
My favorite book is: Jenseits von Gut und Böse, Friedrich Nietzsche.
Death is: Inevitable. All things were born to die, and life is merely the path of torment that leads up to the eternal hereafter. If the Everlasting had not fixed His canon against self-slaughter, I'm sure that there would be many more people skipping the accursed process of living all together.
Love is: An illusion. There is no "love". The pre-ordained romantic tendencies that one can claim exists between two people are nothing more than pleasant lies meant to cover the coarse truth. All that exists is the mindless sexual desire between people that cause them to give into their beast-like urges without consideration for social connections or the effects on others.
The soul is: That immortal thing within our being which gives us self-knowledge and perspective. It is a terrible thing to have a soul, for the acknowledgment of why we do what we do is what raises us above the ignorant animals that do but by will, and never suffer grief or guilt or trauma to which human beings are prone.
My opinion on the similarities and differences between Theodore Geisel (pen name Dr. Seuss) and Ernest Hemingway (pen name Ernest Hemingway), especially as pertaining to the post-post-post-post-post modernist literary movement is: They both base their writing on the utter meaningless of life and the ways to cope with the truth of reality. Seuss decides that the real world is so pain-filled and crushing that he must create imaginary worlds filled with nonsensical verse and improbable situations so as to find as an escapist solution. Hemingway sees the real world as crushing man's desires, so he filters his perspectives on it through his Id in order to create a new reality with a semblance of order.

I am taking this class because: I will be good at it.
My favorite book is: I'm sure it's nothing you've read. That isn't meant to be a sarcastic comment, but rather an observation. Explaining the book to someone who will never read it is really just a silly waste of our time.
Death is: Ha.
Love is: Really quite pointless. I mean that. It's all just temporary, in a metaphysical sense.
The soul is: A piece of you that stays behind even when the rest of you is gone. At least until I'm dragged in to do something about it.
My opinion on the similarities and differences between Theodore Geisel (pen name Dr. Seuss) and Ernest Hemingway (pen name Ernest Hemingway), especially as pertaining to the post-post-post-post-post modernist literary movement is: I have no idea who these people are. I assume they're important?

I am taking this class because: English is a required course, and Honors English sounded challenging.
My favorite book is: The Stand by Steven King
Death is: the end of one existance, and the beginning of the next
Love is: something I doubt I'll ever understand
The soul is: something that can never be defined by mortal beings
My opinion on the similarities and differences between Theodore Geisel (pen name Dr. Seuss) and Ernest Hemingway (pen name Ernest Hemingway), especially as pertaining to the post-post-post-post-post modernist literary movement is:
I'm afraid I have to say I don't have one at this point in time.

I am taking this class because: I enjoy English. It's a fascinating language and the applications are myriad - so many ideas can be expressed, either simply or in as much depth as one might like.
My favorite book is: I can't think of just one.
Death is: Another step in life, but one I don't care to take just yet.
Love is: Complicated. I wouldn't pretend to understand it.
The soul is: It defies easy description. Ask ten people and you would probably get twelve different answers.
My opinion on the similarities and differences between Theodore Geisel (pen name Dr. Seuss) and Ernest Hemingway (pen name Ernest Hemingway), especially as pertaining to the post-post-post-post-post modernist literary movement is: I don't think I'll even pretend to know this one. Not much of a fan of either though.

I am taking this class because: I enjoy English and literature.
My favorite book is: The Once and Future King, T. H. White.
Death is: when the brain no longer sends out electrical impulses making the body function.
Love is: chemicals released by one's brain in the presence of someone our higher brain functions recognise as being important.
The soul is: The idea of the higher functions of the brain.
My opinion on the similarities and differences between Theodore Geisel (pen name Dr. Seuss) and Ernest Hemingway (pen name Ernest Hemingway), especially as pertaining to the post-post-post-post-post modernist literary movement is:
Both frequently discuss the despair of loneliness in the human condition, althought Geisel allows a greater sentiment of hope in his work. Both use unconventional language, although Hemingway is not as playful and creative as Geisel.
