Keeping Your Wits About You... [Monday 2nd Period 10-11] Class # 13 DANGER ROOM

Once again they were meeting in the Danger Room!

Wilson was leaning against the table with all the morning treats, sipping his coffee and looking vaguely amused. As soon as everyone was gathered and had their coffee, tea, whatever he cleared his throat and called them over to listen to their latest Danger Room assignment.

"Good morning," he began, setting his coffee off to the side and putting his hands in his pockets.

"So far this semester, we've focused on keeping your wits about you when it was just yourself. Today we're going to tackle something infinitely more tricky."

Looking a bit rueful, he grinned at them.

"Today, you're going to be attempting to navigate ways to protect others who seem hell bent on self destruction. Believe me when I say, it will be hard to keep your wits calm, while at the same time trying to be one step ahead of the reckless behavior of others."

Something Wilson -coughthankyouHousecough- had plenty of experience with.

"As I call your name, you'll go into the scenario. I'd give you all hints about what's on the other side of that door but most of the time, these situations are feel it out as you go. Everybody ready? Okay. Good luck!"

"Not really," Lana said. "I don't really have that many people to get presents for. There's no one back home, so just some people here mostly."

"Plus," she said with a smile. "I'm still recuperating from getting all my college applications turned in."

"God that was brutal," Isabel agreed. "I finished the week before Thanksgiving. I wanted to get it done so that I could enjoy the holiday."

"So far I've gotten my Christmas cards done, and I've ordered some stuff on line. But I've still got a ton of things to do. Cookies for one. Finishing shopping, and then seeing about getting a small tree for my room." She gets a bit excited about the holiday.

"Sounds wonderful," Lana said. "Maybe we can make cookies together sometime. I have to make some for Wyatt anyway."

"That would be good. Probably later this week, if not, definitely next week." Isabel raised an eyebrow, "Although you're making my boyfriend cookies? Should I be jealous?" She was teasing. Honestly.

"No," Lana said with a grin. "No worries about that. I'm very happy with the brother I have. It's just... Wyatt did so much to help me when I was sick, I wanted to do something to thank him."

"Wyatt did so much for everyone that was sick," Isabel grumbled. "Not that I blame him or anything. Just...I was worried." Rightfully so as she found out afterwards..

Lana nodded. "You must have been nearly frantic. I know I would have been."

"I was almost too tired to be frantic," she admitted. "That was a very bad week."

"I should make cookies for you, too," Lana said with a rueful smile. "I wish I'd been able to help."

"You were busy being sick," Isabel pointed out.

"I know," Lana said with a small shiver. "But I still wish I'd been well enough to have helped."

"Next time around. Not that I really want there to be a next time," she said quickly. "But you know what I mean."

"I absolutely do," Lana said. "And yeah, next unpleasant event I hope I can actually do some good."

"Personally I'm hoping the next unpleasant event isn't scheduled until after the holidays," Isabel replied with a wry grin. "I don't want anything to mess up Christmas. Besides, with everything I have to do, I have not time for it."

"Christmas is a really big thing for you, huh?" Lana said with a smile.

She ducked her head and smiled sheepishly. "Yeah, it is. Growing up, we always knew we were different, but Christmas was a chance to forget about that. To just be normal kids for a change. Or at least that's what I tried to tell myself. Now? Well, it's just fun."

[Heading out for a bit. Back in an hour or two.]

"That's great," Lana said. "After my parents died it was just my aunt and me. We usually ended up at some fancy party or something where I didn't know anyone. I'd just smuggle a book or two in and find a quiet corner to hide out in."

She smiled, "Which, given the size of the houses, was usually very easy to do."

"I don't think that's going to be something you're going to get a chance to do this year," Isabel pointed out. "I'm sure Chris will make sure you have a nice Christmas."

Lana smiled shyly. "I still can't quite believe it's real," she said. "And I certainly don't want to assume he's going to bring me along for Christmas. But it would be nice."

"Do you really think he's going to leave you alone?" she asked dryly. "I'm heading back to Roswell at least for a few days. And if my brothers know what's good for them, they'll take a break from their road trip and be there."

Lana blushed. "Good point. Well, I hope your brothers make the smart choice and get themselves home. I'm sure they will though."

"They should know better? You'd think," Isabel sighed. "I'll wait and see who's at the table for cookies Christmas Eve afternoon."

"Is that a family tradition?" Lana asked curiously. "Cookies the afternoon of Christmas Eve? It sound nice."

"It is. It's a chance for everyone to unwind from all the last minute stuff," she explained, smiling at the memory. "And have a snack before we went to the early service. It was after we got back from that that the real festivities began."

Lana smiled. "That sounds so nice. Someday if I'm ever lucky enough to have a family of my own, I'll have to remember that one."
