Karal was still a little bit glittery around the ears this morning, and he'd brought tea, a leather bound notebook, and a grumpy Firecat with him to open the library.

Karal grinned and quickly used the computer to find out where the books on Christmas were kept. "It sounds like a great deal of fun! We have a mid-winter holiday, but it doesn't involve gifts."

"The gifts are the best part. Cor gave me a turnip last year. That's not traditional, he's just not very bright sometimes and his brother played a trick on him."

"A turnip?" Karal stared for a moment, then shook his head. "It's certainly original. Here, the books are this way." He hopped off his stool and gestured towards the shelves, maybe a bit excited himself at the idea of learning about a new holiday.

"Corin told him to," she said, trailing after him. "I need to decide what to get for Seely, too."

"Oh." He frowned thoughtfully as he led the way to the shelves. "If it's celebrated here, that means there are people I need to get gifts for as well. I think."

"It is," she replied. "It's not until the end of the month, though, I know that much. After my birthday."

"Your birthday is soon?" he asked, turning to look at her. "I didn't know that."

"The sixteenth," she replied, smiling a little. "I'll...be sixteen. On the sixteenth. How odd."

"It has a nice feel to it." Karal stopped in front of a shelf of books, a number of which seemed to feature red and green in great abundance. "Here we are, books on Christmas."

"There's a lot of red and green," she observed softly.

"Perhaps they're the colours of the holiday? In the way that Karsite festivals have black and gold?"

"The court at Anvard has gold and green as their colors," she said, nodding. "Narnia is blue and gold, I think." She plucked a book off the shelf, flipping through the pages. "...why is there a man in furs climbing out of a fireplace?"

Karal stared. "Is it lit?"

"...I don't think so?" Aravis looked a bit more alarmed.

"It...no, it's not," he said, peering over her shoulder and breathing a sigh of relief. "Glory, there is no possible way that man could have come down a chimney, at least not that chimney! And he'd be filthy if he had."

"He's rather large. I'm not sure I could fit down that chimney," Aravis said, staring.

"You would not wish to try. They're certainly not safe places. Why didn't he simply use the door?" Christmas was not quite what he'd expected. "Does it explain?"

"His name is...Santa Claus," Aravis read. "It does not explain, but it says he is coming to town."

Pause.

"Will he be coming here for Christmas?"

Karal leaned one shoulder against the shelves, really not liking the sound of this. "It sounds like a warning, and if he can somehow come down a chimney, then he must have powers of some kind," he said thoughtfully. "I hope he's not coming here."

"He sees you when you're sleeping," she read. "And she knows when you're awake. He knows if you've been bad or good, so be good for goodness' sake -- Karal! He sounds very bad. ...I may have to smuggle my sword into the dorms. I won't let him get us."

"This is vile, Aravis. We shouldn't have to worry during a time of celebration." He folded his arms, half way between angry and worried. "Who does he think he is, to judge us so, spying and sneaking about the place!"

"You'd better not pout, you'd better not cry, you'd better watch out -- " Aravis read. "This is not at all like Christmas at home! We have Father Christmas and presents and nice things!"

"I've seen words like this before." Karal had pretty much settled on indignant. "Clear threats, and if you dare to express disagreement, you're punished for it. Surely the school can't countenance this, this, red-coated scoundrel looming over its students!"

"It's part of the tradition!" Aravis said, flipping the pages more. "He's all over this book!"

"Just because it's a tradition, doesn't make it right," he said firmly. "And a creature using magic to threaten people and, and sneak into their houses to do who knows what to them is wrong, no matter how long it's been happening. We will have to do something about it. Does it say what date Christmas happens?"
