Basic Japanese - Wednesday November 28th - 3rd period

Taking a deep breath Yondaime passed out this week’s packet of phrases and words. “This week is similar to last in that we’re continuing on with informal speech and slang. This is more conversational type slang for going out to a party or a bar of some sort and possibly picking up a date,” he threw the students a smirk. “Not that I expect you to be doing any of that… going to a bar, I mean.”

“A lot of the phrases seem rather tame compared to how American’s do it, but politeness is a huge thing in Japan and so speaking like this to someone you don’t know is really ballsy. I’d just like you all to practice these sayings; they may or may not be on the final. I’m going to be going around asking if you did what I asked last week.”




Tanoshin deru? – Are you having a good time?

Tanoshii yo – Yeah, I’m having fun.

Kimi de kiteru no? – Did you come here alone?

Issho ni nomanai? – Shall we drink together? (Strangely very effective in Japan)

Koko dare ka yoyaku zumi? – Is this seat taken? (Cool way to say it… apparently)

Suwaranai? – Do you want to sit down?

Suwatte mo ii? – May I sit down?

Namae nante iu no? – What’s your name?

Nanda! – Guess!

Nante itta no? – What did you say?

Doko ni sunderu no? – Where do you live?

Achi – over there

Toshi ikutsu? – How old are you?

Ikutsu ni mieru? – How old do I look?

Yoku koko kuru no? – Do you come here often?

Mae ni atta koto aru? – Have I seen you before?

Odoranai? – Shall we dance?

Notteru? – Are you in the Mood?

Betsu ni? – Not really

Mada Odoranai – I don’t feel like dancing yet.

Odori umai ne – You’re a good dancer

Tanoshimou yo! – Let’s party!

Konya wa nomou! _ Let’s get drunk!

Kanari nonderu? – Have you been drinking a lot?

Jaa, motto nomeba! – Well, drink some more!

Nomi ga tarinai – You need to drink more

Yotteru? – Are you drunk?

Mou nomu no yame tara – Maybe you should stop drinking

Daijoubu? – Are you all right?

Yasashii ne – You’re kind

Nanji goro den no? – What time are you leaving?

Tanoshi kattara iru – If I have a good time, I’ll stay.

Tanoshiku sasete ageru – I’ll help you have a good time.

Kimi no koto motto shiritai – I want to know more about you.

Issho ni yoake no ko-hi- nomanai? – Do you want to have morning coffee together? (Old fashioned way of asking someone to stay the night)

Mata aeru? – Shall we meet again?

Denwa shite mo ii? – Can I call you?

Kawaisou – What a pity

Hidou na – Too bad

Yabai! - It’s risky!

Ganbare! – Go for it! (Said to a group)

Ganbatte! – Go for it! (Said to individual)

Genki dase yo – Cheer Up

Ochitsuite – Calm down!

Ki ni shinai de – Never mind

Kakkoii – Cool

Dasai – Uncool

Moro shibu – Tough

Sugoi – Awesome

Kawaii – Cute

Rikou dane – clever

Manekko – Copycat

Kakko warui – Ugly

Kimochi warui – Weird / Yucky (bad feeling)
