Professor Tomoe wasn't taking the class this week. Instead, Vice Principal Hades was there, looking thrilled to be there as usual. Of course, the normal hint of malice was a little more prominent today.

"Sit down and try not to cough up a lung. Today's topic is raising the dead, because Tomoe's a twisted man and drinks the local Kool-Aid. Anyway. Even though this is a class on science of the mad variety, I don't care. Science is for folks who don't have powers and that doesn't concern me. Bringing back the dead is a piece of cake. It's once they're back that you've gotta worry. Usually they're pretty annoyed at being disturbed and want revenge for whatever got them dead and in the Underworld in the first place. Then sometimes you get zombies. Good fun. Let's give this a whirl.

Victor wasn't feeling well. He had tried injecting himself with a formula he devised first thing in the morning after waking up. Didn't work. He had tried a healing spell that he knew. Didn't work. He would have stuck around his room for a while and tried more if it weren't for the fact that he refused to let illness make him deviate from his schedule no matter how sick he felt.

And now he had class with a mockery of the creature who had his mother's soul. Oh, today was just the best day ever. He felt it appropriate that he felt like hell.

"I would bring back my mother," Victor said weakly. "Her debt would be paid to me simply by living."

Kabuto frowned at Victor, but didn't say anything. If this guy wasn't going to take care of himself, that was his own prerogative.

Ed sat, clenching his fist as the lecture continued then stood up to go.

"No. I refuse."

Hades shrugged, then got his used-car salesman groove on. "Come oooon! Give it a try. It's all hypotheticals." It was all hypotheticals until someone lost a soul.

"No, it's not," Ed spat. "Already been there, done that, not going to talk about it again."

Hades' expression changed from laid back to interested. "Really," he said, not really asking. "Now that is interesting. Raising the dead, do that a lot?"

"Just the once," he replied, eyeing the teacher.

"Didn't go so well?" Wow, he even managed to sound sympathetic.

"Alchemy can't make a soul," he answered flatly.

"No kidding," he muttered, then covered by quickly adding. "The problem there is that the soul isn't the territory of science. Heck, most forms of science don't even recognize that the soul exists. That's the realm of your all-powerful deities come in. Souls? Now that's my business."

Edward rolled his eyes. "Science that doesn't accept the soul is no science at all."

"Eh, scientists get a little annoyed when they can't prove something exists. I know all about 'em, on the other hand. Nothing to it. Person dies, soul comes to the Underworld." That wasn't entirely true. "Anyone who wants a soul back has to go through me." Also not entirely true.

He's here, humming to himself.
