When the students arrived, they'd find a advanced chemistry textbook, pencil, and paper lying on each desk. Squall had a book, too. At the front of the room was what looked to be a papier-mâché volcano.

"Today, class," he said, as he tossed out the sign-in clipboard, "we're going to learn chemistry."

"Chemistry is what happens when you mix chemicals," Squall began. He then started flipping through the textbook and summarizing bits and pieces here and there. It was slipshod and haphazard, but it'd at least give the students some idea of what chemistry was about. Maybe. Possibly. Most of the time it sounded like Squall didn't really know what he was talking about.

When he got to the bit about the periodic table of the elements, he ripped the page with the diagram out of the book and taped it to the chalkboard. "That's important."

He went through every chapter of the book, giving a few sentences of explanation out of each. "And there you have it," he finished. "Chemistry." Then he poured some baking soda and vinegar into the paper volcano and watched as foam bubbled out and spilled onto the floor. "See? Nothing to it. Any questions?"

"Now, I want you to turn to page [handwavey] and answer questions 1, 3, 7, 11, 15, and 23. You may work in groups, if you'd like."

"I think I hate you," Jenny informed him.

Ronan grinned. "Sorry?" he said, half-question, half-apology. "It's not far different from some of the more complex wizardries, so... Yeah."

"Wizardry makes you do math in your head? Mean," Jenny said. "Our Doctor just has to think, 'I would like this radioactive waste to be strawberry ice cream now,' and la, ice cream."

Ronan frowned. "That... That definitely wouldn't work where I come from," he said. "For one thing, I'm not sure you could change radioactive waste into strawberry ice cream -- as much as I might want to try, now -- and for another, you'd need to be able to describe both things in as much detail as possible, as well as the required change. You need to tell the universe what to do, but more like you're programming it, not just... giving it an order."

Jenny boggled a little. "He'd never get anything done. I mean, Jeroen was some sort of computer genius before his first breakdown, but the new guy, ha, no." Then she grinned slyly. "I'm pretty sure I can describe strawberry ice cream."

Ronan raised his eyebrow. "At the molecular level? At the very least, you'd need to be able to describe some form of recipe -- a lot of the constituents would have words in the Speech, but you'd have to be able to tell the spell how to put them together."

Jenny sighed. "Suddenly I'm so glad our magic doesn't work like yours. But there are lots of you wizards, right? We only ever get one Doctor at a time. So it needs to be simpler, I guess. Less mathy."

"I don't know if I'd say lots, although given areas will have higher concentrations -- but yeah, we're definitely not, y'know, just one person. There's no one else who uses magic at all where you come from? It's all just tech or individual powers?"

"Yeah, it's pretty much just him," Jenny said with a shrug. "Actually, except for a few of us, it's pretty much all tech. Even if it is tech to the degree that it seems like magic."

"That gets you an A for the day," Squall told her.

"Yay!" Jenny said, assuming getting an A meant no longer having to do maths.

Yes, it did.

"Don't let it go to your head."

Jenny totally let it go to her head.
