Ethics [Thursday, November 8, 1st period]

Anakin was quieter than usual, trying to shake off the feeling of foreboding he'd woken up with. He hoped it had nothing to do with the bachelor party he'd be attending later in the day.

His weekend plans weren't far from his mind, though, as the day's lesson made clear. "Love is patient, love is kind," he began, then made the universal symbol for "blah, blah, blah" with his hand.

He might secretly be a soft touch on the subject, but no one in this room would ever know it.

"In the Jedi Order, we were taught that in order to maintain proper distance, to negotiate impartially across our galaxy, we were to strive for serenity, not passion. To be proper Jedi, we shall not know anger, or hatred, or love."

He crossed his arms over his chest and glanced around the room, eyes resting on Qui-Gon and Jaina for longer moments. "Is this an unreasonable standard to hold someone to?"

Sokka cowed a little, but still pressed on with his line of thought. "With all due respect to the Jedi, sir, suppressing your emotions sounds awfully STUPID. ...And, yes, unreasonable."

Anakin pressed his mouth into a thin line. "Is it stupid because it is asking too much from beings in general--and keep in mind that the Jedi have been successful in this doctrine for ten thousand years--or is it stupid because you couldn't do it?"

"I didn't say people couldn't do it," Sokka said. "I mean, it's the only path to true enlightenment and all that. It's just that... well, emotions are part of what makes us human. I just don't think enlightenment's at all worth giving that up."

"That's why you'll never get there," Anakin said in a distinctly unenlightened way.

"Look, if I wanted to be a monk sitting alone on some mountain, I'd be a monk sitting alone on some mountain. If you want to do it, that's fine, but you miss out on a WHOLE lotta life that way."

"It's easy to be detached when you're off in exile," Anakin said, snorting derisively. "We had the constant temptation because we were involved in how the galaxy functioned. That's what made us special. Practical enlightenment. There's no reason to be the crazy hermit Jedi."

"Sure there is," Sokka answered with a shrug. "There's just no reason to require it."

"We can't allow just anyone to be a Jedi," Anakin said.

Because if they had, it diminished his uniqueness, and it was always about Anakin needing to feel special.

"No, of course not," Sokka spat back. "Only the right sort of people, only if they're worthy, and definitely no girls."

Anakin looked confused. "There are girls." He pointed at Jaina.

Sokka blinked. "Sorry. Bad experience a while back with someone who refused to teach my sister."

"Don't let your experiences blind you to new thoughts or opinions," Anakin, Uncontested Champion of Hypocrisy, told him.

"Yeah... thanks," Sokka replied, not sure what to make of that. "I wasn't planning on it..."
