Ethics [Thursday, November 8, 1st period]

Anakin was quieter than usual, trying to shake off the feeling of foreboding he'd woken up with. He hoped it had nothing to do with the bachelor party he'd be attending later in the day.

His weekend plans weren't far from his mind, though, as the day's lesson made clear. "Love is patient, love is kind," he began, then made the universal symbol for "blah, blah, blah" with his hand.

He might secretly be a soft touch on the subject, but no one in this room would ever know it.

"In the Jedi Order, we were taught that in order to maintain proper distance, to negotiate impartially across our galaxy, we were to strive for serenity, not passion. To be proper Jedi, we shall not know anger, or hatred, or love."

He crossed his arms over his chest and glanced around the room, eyes resting on Qui-Gon and Jaina for longer moments. "Is this an unreasonable standard to hold someone to?"

"Serenity would be useful while negotiating but," Ino looked indignant. "what kind of a life would that be all the time? It's totally unreasonable to expect someone to be able to just... eliminate, their emotions. Especially off the job."

"Not eliminate," Anakin corrected. "Move past. You take a deep breath, figure out what made you react that way, then set it aside."

Obi-Wan had only told him that about a billion times. It had never really taken.

Ino frowned. "Like, constantly meditating or something, to move past it right that instant?" 'Cause she could meditate, but... that was like, way beyond her.

Anakin nodded. "Exactly like that."

"People can do that?" It was sort of hard to believe. "... wouldn't that take a lot of..." she struggled for a word, "colour out of living?"

"Hardly," Anakin said. "When a Jedi meditates, he is in greater communion with the universe around him. We see more clearly, hear more clearly, and can focus more efficiently."

"..." She considered that, "but wouldn't you feel more clearly too?"

"Thus the rule," Anakin said a little acerbically.

"It's a stupid rule." Ino crossed her arms, "If the training makes you feel more, then it's completely unreasonable to expect you to feel less. How is that even supposed to work?" It wasn't adding up properly for her.
