Library; Wednesday [ 11/07 ]

Adah came in a bit early so that she had plenty of time to limp around the library to choose her choice reading materials for the day. By the time things were set for the day, she had set aside an eclectic pile of medical journals and comic books, as well as a carefully balanced tower waiting to be sorted, although perhaps she'd leave that. She felt that the way some of the books jutted out and it curved and threatened to wobble over like trees too tall in the wind, creaking, moaning, dizzying to look up at.

Returning from her walk on the beach, River stopped by the library, knowing Adah would be there. They had met yesterday, of course, but River couldn't resist seeing her again, although that need did cause a slight worry at the back of her mind.

She had no apple today though; it had been given to a horse. Instead she brought a small paper bag of acorns, because if Adah wanted to feed the vole skeleton, at least River could provide some of the food, seeing as Adah had referred to it as 'theirs', even though it had been a gift. A shared interest - and River could feed the sibling flying beneath the lamp in her room, casting shadows.

In the doorway she hesitated, wondering if she should just sneak up to the desk and leave the bag there for Adah to find. Quietly, undecided, she approached.

Sensing movement, Adah blinked a few times to break her mind away from the firm blocks of shapes and slashes of colors that had been taking over thanks to the comic book and then lifted her head. Another blink as shakes slowly worked themselves back to reality, taking softer, more rounded forms, more blending colors, and then she gave a soft smile in greeting for River.

"Different kind of food this time," she said, plagin the bag on the desk. "And not for you, unless your diet is unusual." She smiled back, leaning against the desk, all thoughts of hiding gone.

Sparse, true, but her diet was one thing about herself that Adah considered to be pretty normal. Her head tilted a moment at the bag before leaning forward to pry it open enough with two fingers to take a peak inside, and she grinned a little. Those would last the skeleton a while. An eternity, in fact, considering he wouldn't even be eating them. Good.

"Last thing to disappear," River replied happily. "Millenia, more if they petrify." There was no need to inform Adah of that of course. "Longer than acorns, but then again, they won't grow into trees. Pros and cons. Unless the projected shadow from the one I have hanging from my lamp could be considered something similar."

The ground was already getting hard with the cold weather, Adah observed; these acorns may have already missed their chance, anyway. Her head tilted at the bag a moment longer, before giving it a slight nudge with her fingers, moving it just a bit, the slightest shift, but it made a big difference with the angles of everything else on the desk.

"So we save them from the cold and offer a different life as eternal food to dead vole skeletons." River looked pleased, clearly liking the idea of that. She reached out and nudged the bag too, then continued, placing her fingers over Adah's.

One more nudge to ensure the bag was at a good angle before Adah turned over her hand so that her fingers could brush up against River's and she smiled lightly, glad River approved although she felt that plan lacked a little bit of solidity to it, but she was terribly careless in general dead pet maintenance as a whole, so it wasn't too much of a concern.

"Might solidify with time," River replied, gently tickling Adah's palm with her fingertips. "And one advantage of having dead pets is that maintenance when necessary can be kept to a minimum." With a quick movement, one that she almost regretted immediately for fear it might be too fast, she leaned forward to place a kiss on Adah's cheek.

The kiss on the cheek was sudden and unexpected, but it was certainly was appreciated. Besides, Adah's slow blinking and the placid creeping of a light blush at the surprise made up for River's quickness. Sluggishness balancing out the quicksilver.

Appreciated surprise was a good result and River chuckled against Adah's cheek before pulling back. "Nothing like dancing in a library with you and dead pets," she said.

Adah's grin was almost a laugh; she was glad she could be on the same level as dead pets.

Sharing an understanding of the importance of animal skeletons and their maintenance - even if periodical - made River join in the almost laughter, and she leaned forward again, this time to place a light kiss on Adah's lips. "Shouldn't keep you from your work," she added.

A soft sound, a soft grin, as Adah responded simply by craning her neck to reach River's lips and give her a kiss back, letting it linger. What work? She'd been reading comic books; she was potentially the worst library aide employed at this place, and it didn't bother her a bit.

Not the worst, definitely not the worst. "Making me rediscover my interest in libraries," River whispered, before pressing another kiss against her lips. She had been wary of knowledge and the search for it for a long time, associating it with an innocence of childhood. Of course, when she went to the library in search of Adah, her thoughts were anything but innocent.

An interest in libraries and an interest in those who worked at them were two completely different things, and Adah would not be convinced otherwise unless River planned on leaving here with a armful of books potentially taller than she was.

After another quick kiss, River protested with a grin: "I've read what you recommended me!" And enjoyed it too, she had to admit. Perhaps poetry, or at least fiction, was easier to deal with.

What Adah had recommended so far wasn't nearly enough, she decided, grinning happily and a mite evilly. She'd have to work on a list.

...A very, very long list.

"Emily could voice things," River replied, hoping that whatever Adah recommended would add to their language. "Talking through stories. Then the stories begin to talk."

Adah's head bobbed lopsidedly in a nod of agreement. The Lime had served them well so far, that was true. She'd have to make sure she poured through her resources well to find some equally effective.

"Make a list." It almost sounded like she dared Adah to do it, River thought, but she knew she didn't need to.
