Anakin leaned a little uncomfortably against his desk as he waited for the students to take their seats.

"Today we talk about diligence, temperance, and forgiveness," he said quietly, "and we're going to use examples from last week's exercise to do so."

He flipped the hologram to life, focusing on a shot of Palpatine's face. "The goal was to save this man, the democratically chosen leader of your galaxy, at the cost--if necessary--of your own lives. After the first dozen or so droids shooting at you, you certainly had the option of retreating and leaving the mission for someone else to complete. So when does diligence turn to foolhardiness?"

The holocam switched to footage of two Jedi, blue blades flashing, taking on an older man wielding a red lightsaber. The older Jedi went ricocheting into a wall, then the second one, fire in his eyes, closed in on their opponent who dropped to his knees moments later with two lightsabers held to his throat.

The Jedi wielding the lightsabers looked an awful lot like their teacher.

"Temperance," Anakin said softly. "Do you kill him now? He's dangerous. He held the head of a galaxy-wide government hostage. He injured your partner. He certainly tried to kill you first. Or do you capture him and leave him to the whims of the courts?"

He shook his head. "Finally, forgiveness. You save the chancellor, at great personal expense, only to discover he's not the kind of man you thought he was. Your act of heroism has managed to make the situation at home much, much worse. How do you forgive yourself for it? Can you forgive the others who put you into that position?"

"So you'd be trying to evade detection with a politician who's been kidnapped, your wounded partner and a man who just tried his best to kill both of them?"

"In this scenario at least, my partner is a medic - he'd be able to heal himself." Ino said, "I'm more likely to be the injured one all things considered. If not though and I was the only one fully functional, I'd find an officer or and take over his mind. He'd be able to give orders to 'move the prisoners' or something like that."

"Take over his mind?" Anakin repeated, arching up an eyebrow.

"Yeah. Possession. It's a family technique." Ino tilted her head at him, "It's one of the skills that makes my family good at reconnaissance and assassination. I started learning it when I was sevenish."

"Don't do it here."

It wasn't a request.

Ino stared at him. "On you?"

"On the island," Anakin clarified. "People here get twitchy."

"Oh." Ino leaned back in her chair, "I promised my Dad I'd only use it if my life was in danger, or if I was training with someone who knew what they were up against. Like, Yondaime-sama." Even if he hadn't returned her phone call yet.

Anakin flattened his lips together. "If you must. Don't cry to me if the backlash is harsh."

"Backlash?" Ino stared at him, "What are you talking about? I won't use it for fun." Mind control wasn't a game.

"It wouldn't matter," Anakin said. "I never used it except when I felt it was necessary, either. People's definition of necessary in this town are extraordinarily uncompromising."

"You've got mind powers?" Ino blurted before flushing and staring at her hands, "I mean, nevermind, sorry." Her eyes narrowed in thought, "I won't use it. Or, at least, I'll try not to."

She looked uncomfortable, "I'm used to relying on it though, if I'm in danger. Family tradition. And since my other weapons aren't allowed either, it was sort of my last line of defense." Ino was really going to have to work on her hand-to-hand more.

"I don't exactly go around with what I can do on index cards," Anakin replied. "And yes, I understand the temptation. Resist it, at least here. People back home are more understanding about this sort of power."

"Yes sir. I suppose I should start watching what I say then, too." Ino said, still looking discomfited, "Thank you for warning me."
