Library; Wednesday [ 10/31 ]

October 31. Thirty one backwards was thirteen, a supposedly unlucky number; October, from the root oct, meaning eight, maintaining its Roman ground despite no longer being the eighth month. All Hallow's Eve was certainly something never celebrated in the Price household, so Adah didn't feel any inclination to dress up or anything like that. She figured her personality was dark and cynical enough to meet the holiday without costumes to add to it. She did support the theory of rotting teeth out of your mouth so you either looked like the witch you were trying to resemble or one of the ear-pulling Crawley children she barely escaped spending her entire education with, though, as indicative of the bowl of suckers set in front of the books and notebooks and pens spread around the desk. However, there was a catch, a small scrap of writing attached to it:

Lliw reh tsniaga neve
Evol ll'ehs noos, gnivol won ton fi,
Evig ll'ehs tub, stfig tpecca t'nseod ehs,
Eusrup ll'ehs noos, seelf ehs fi rof.

Have the poet? Get a sweet.
Don't quite know it? Ah! Defeat!

She had a temptation to go with Poe, but realized that, considering the day, that would have been too easy, and, besides, she couldn't quite get this one out of her head lately.

River bit her lip, nervous. "Welcome to visit again," she said quietly. Yes, quite welcome, the room had felt empty and cold without Adah there. So many things they could do. She looked downn at her palm, at the slices in balance, then back at Adah.

"Just an invitation," River said, looking down again, cheeks turning red. Too fast again. Too much.

Slowly, River lifted her gaze, a smile appearing and widening into a grin. "Can make sure it's worth it," she said, meeting Adah's eyes. "Many options and possibilities." Quite a few, indeed, especially with Adah.

Another reason to smile, and it turned into a soft laugh. "Wanted to show you Serenity too," River added, her head tilting slightly to one side. "To balance things out." She had seen a lot of things in Adah's mind, after all.

The response clearly pleased River, and she curled forward, her elbows resting on her knees. Her hand still held the apple slices, what was left of them, her own half mostly gone now. But there was something else, something she'd wanted to do, if Adah would agree. Slowly - trying to learn not to move too fast - she leaned forward to place s light kiss on Adah's cheek, but ready to pull back should this move be unwanted.

And River pressed her lips against Adah's cheek, taking her time, feeling the softness of her skin and the scent of her. When she pulled away, she whispered: "Not lonely when I'm with you." I love you, Adah Price. But she couldn't make herself say that, because really, it was too early to say. Instead, she added: "So many things that appear in my mind, and my first reaction is to tell you."

"Wish I could show you," River whispered against Adah's cheek. "Wish I could let you sort and quantify." The fingers brushing lightly against her leg sent a shiver through her. "Wish I could now what we'd come up with."

"Shame? If you don't believe in guilt, do you still believe in shame?" River teased her, her voice still a whisper against Adah's cheek. "Always a dance of some kind. Told you we'd be good at dancing." And she too enjoyed this particular dance, especially because it was in a library, where Adah was supposed to work. She slipped her hand - the one not holding slices of apples - over Adah's fingers, then running it up her arm.

Impossible and very enjoyable. River pressed another kiss against Adah's cheek, then another very light one on the corner of her mouth. "A peeled apple shouldn't be kept waiting," she whispered, still teasing. Her eyes probably betrayed how much she enjoyed this.
