Library; Wednesday [ 10/31 ]

October 31. Thirty one backwards was thirteen, a supposedly unlucky number; October, from the root oct, meaning eight, maintaining its Roman ground despite no longer being the eighth month. All Hallow's Eve was certainly something never celebrated in the Price household, so Adah didn't feel any inclination to dress up or anything like that. She figured her personality was dark and cynical enough to meet the holiday without costumes to add to it. She did support the theory of rotting teeth out of your mouth so you either looked like the witch you were trying to resemble or one of the ear-pulling Crawley children she barely escaped spending her entire education with, though, as indicative of the bowl of suckers set in front of the books and notebooks and pens spread around the desk. However, there was a catch, a small scrap of writing attached to it:

She had a temptation to go with Poe, but realized that, considering the day, that would have been too easy, and, besides, she couldn't quite get this one out of her head lately.

"Yeah, it's been pretty boring," he agreed, leaning against the desk. "Just classes and some homework and some sleep. I really shouldn't complain because this is so much easier than what I came from."

Adah's head tilted a little with her eyes set widely in an agreeing sort of expression as she recapped all the things that used to make up her own typical day before she started coming here. After Bethlehem, because she never did much then other than Verse after Verse after Verse. But in Africa.

"I used to think I read a lot before," she finally wrote a moment later. "That was nothing compared to what I plow through these days. Thankfully, I seem to keep finding things to look forward to."

"Oh?" He grinned and couldn't help asking, "What are you looking forward to right now?"

Adah looked at the lines of her notebook, which sat there waiting to be filled in, and she slowly allowed her own grin to surface before placidly picking up the pen.

"Well, it's Thursday, you see..." she began, pre-empting, glancing toward the Eel for a response before saying any more.

"Thursday, Thursday, Thursday," Lee repeated, tapping his chin thoughtfully. "Oh, Thursday! We've got a thing to do on Thursday, don't we?" Lee asked, voice light and playful. "It was...at the park? No, it was in town!"

Adah's smirk went a little wry as she looked up at him. "The park is in town," she pointed out. "And did we have a thing? Here I was just thinking about the fact that it will be All Saint's Day and there will be people too sick from candy to move that will be needing mocking."

"We had a thing," he said, nodding knowingly. "A good thing. With stars. And you and me. On the beach. You count them and I get to enjoy that."

"Ah, yes," Adah wrote with an inhale, a lift of her chin in realization. "I'd just about nearly forgotten. I might even say that's possibly even more exciting than the mocking."

"Well," he said, smile reappearing again, "you can always mock me. About the modeling. Or something else. But, even though I know you're a big fan of my modeling, you can still mock."

"Counting and mocking your modeling? I'm not sure I could handle all that at once, it might end up being far too exciting for me."

"Well, you know, since we won't be a in place where people might walk in," he started, leaning forward to drop his voice to a conspiratorial whisper, "I might even show you some of my stuff."

Adah's eyebrow lifted. Well, now. That certainly had her thinking that the might not just be talking about modeling; had her hoping, anyway, for several reasons, and some of them actually somewhat practical, really. She leaned forward for a moment, head lowered slightly with her eyes gazing up at him to match the fashion of his whisper before pulling back just enough to write. "Might? And now I'll be sitting here, getting my hopes up, only to have them dashed upon rocks like so many waves."

"I won't dash your hopes," he promised quietly, not really talking completely about modeling anymore. "There's absolutely no way."

There was a small shift in Adah's shoulder as a little shiver ran up her back, spreading warmly in the form of a smile, eyes closing lightly. She was fairly certain now that she really did hope the Eel wasn't talking about modeling. But he had said there was absolutely no way; forget the fact that the hopes in mind were currently strictly in mind. If there was no way...well, then...

"I'm certainly glad you always come in at the end of the day; I might have had to be annoyed with you for making me look forward to Thursday even more, only to have to spend several hour still stuck in a library."

"It'll be a good day," he promised, ducking his head to hide the unexpected blush before peeking back to look at her. "And I like coming in at the end of the day because it means my day always ends with you. I can't think of a better way to end it."

Adah's smile brightened into a soft laugh. "And you always compliment me on the effect of my words..."

"Sometimes," he said, reaching up to brush a thumb lightly across her cheek, "I get lucky with my words."

Well, that certainly didn't take long. Not that Adah was complaining, of course. In fact, the brightness now spread more to her eyes which closed, though only for a moment, to the touch, before decidedly settling on his.

Not only did he supposedly just get lucky with his words, he also seemed to have a knack for putting her in situations where she'd actually prefer not to write. Can't write while holding someone's hand, or looking into his eyes.

He returned her gaze, brushing his thumb just under her eye before he dropped his hand back to the desk.

"Tomorrow, I'll get to end the day with you too," he said, pleased by that.

"Lucky you," Adah said softly, and then ducked her head against a light blush over the fact that, really, he'd dropped his hand, so she could drop her gaze and write that, if she wanted to, but it came out before she could help it. There was also the fact that she actually felt like she'd wanted to say it. And that was not something she was used to; very curious indeed, that urge, and she continued in her notebook as if to make sure the notion didn't take root too easily.

"That's quite a lot of luck for one person; you haven't considered the lotto lately, have you?"

"I don't even know what that is," he laughed. "Something good?"

[And falling asleep! Night!]

Adah grinned a little, feeling she should have expected that.

"A form of gambling, in the widest way. Each state has a lotto, a giant pool of money collected from people who buy the tickets to try to match a series of numbers to a randomly selected series of numbers picked at a later time. Should there be no one who selects the right series of numbers, the money is held over, for a larger pot next time."

"Doesn't sound like the odds of winning that are very good," Lee said, making a face. "There'd probably be a better chance of me dying my hair blonde."

Grinning slightly, Adah tilted her head, eyes traveling for the top of the Eel's head, trying to picture it. Her sister's white rabbit hair was all that seemed to appear and even without the association, she knew it wouldn't work, and lightly shook her head. Of course, since she was feeling like she very strongly preferred its current state, she figured that something would definitely be happening so that the Eel had just made for himself a dooming self-prophecy.

"The odds are not good at all, but, my point is, with your current streak of luck, if there's any time to do it, it's probably now."
