Aly was standing in front of the class when they filed into the classroom. "Welcome, everyone. If you don't know me, I'm Aly," she said once everyone was in the room. "I'm apparently teaching you today so I'm teaching my favourite topic and one you need for everyday interaction with others: flirting."

"I put eleven rules on the board that I've used in past spying classes to get the students there to think about the connection between flirting and just generally making a good impression on people that you meet."

11 Ways to Start Off on the Right Foot, or a Guide to Flirting.
1. Remain Still and Composed
2. Smile genuinely
3. Maintain as much eye contact as you can tolerate
4. Employ the same body language you would use with an old friend
5. Your opening statement is crucial
6. Assess then focus on the other person's interests
7. Mirror body language and echo speech patterns
8. Plan in advance what you're going to say about yourself
9. Be prepared for likely topics
10. Maintain unshakeable confidence no matter what
11. Work the silences

"Normally I go through these guidelines with a class, making sure that everyone has an idea of what they are. But I was told this is a Communications class so you should have a basic idea already, right?" She grinning, looking around to make sure most were following. "So today, I'd like you to pair off and discuss the rules I have up here - if you disagree with them, if you don't - and then all put them to practice. I don't care who you pair up with. If you end up with someone not of your preferred gender, flirt with them anyway. It's all in good fun and a learning experience."

"If you have any questions, I'll be just over there."

Chris could definitely use some practice flirting, so he looked around for a partner.

Summer sat down near Chris. "Hey."

"You wanna practice flirting with me?" Chris asked, raising his eyebrow and trying to hide his notes.

Summer noticed that he was hiding his notes. "Why not?"

"Okay, sure," Chris said with a shrug.

"So I hear your good with magic," Summer started, giving him a small smile.

This was so weird, but Chris smiled back. "I've got some skills."

"Well, maybe you can teach me a few of those skills," Summer continued, trying very hard to keep a straight face.

Chris had to bite his lip not to laugh. "Sure thing, baby. You seem like you have natural talent."

Yeah, he was so bad at this.

"I'll show you some of my talents if you show me some of yours," Summer replied. Her goal was to make him flail or be distracted enough so she could steal his notes.

Anemone looked around for a flirting partner. This was going to be wonderful!

Cassandra looked over and saw Anemone. Who seemed happy about this exercise.

Cassandra didn't understand, but that was true of a lot of things, so she offered a little wave.

Anemone waved back, and got up to go sit by her friend. "Hi Cassandra, need a partner?"

"I guess so?" She frowned at the board, "I'm not entirely sure what we're supposed to be doing." But she was already following rule 7. Mirroring other peoples' body language was easy.

Of course near-perfect mimicry is probably not what Aly had in mind.

"Flirt. Typically, it means you're showing someone that you like them by being nice." Anemone shrugged awkwardly. "I'm not very good at it. I have all the subtlety of a sledge hammer."

Cassandra grinned, "I have a hard enough time figuring out how to get things across in words sometimes. Most of the stuff I can actually do subtly no one notices..." She pursed her lips, "Maybe I'm too subtle?"

"Maybe. Especially if you're trying to communicate to a boy, they can be really stupid sometimes." She grinned and leaned in conspiratorially. "One boy I punched in the face routinely for years before he figured out I liked him. I don't know if that was too subtle or the wrong signal. I'm not good with things like that."

"Really?" Cassandra frowned, thinking, "What kind of punch was it?"

"A few black eyes, some broken noses, and lots of kicking at his head." Anemone propped her chin on her hand and looked at Cass. "Was that overkill?"

"I don't know?" Cassandra shook her head, "I don't actually know much about... that sort of thing."
