Ethics [Thursday, October 11, 1st period]

Anakin was leaning against his desk looking calm.

It was a strange vibe for him.

"Today we talk about envy," he said quietly. "There's always something that someone else seems to have that we want: clothing, grades, family, love, looks, acclaim...their achievements remind us of something we don't think we have enough of."

He began pacing as he warmed to his subject. "A wise man once said that envy is the art of counting the other person's blessings instead of your own. An entire industry has sprung up and flourished exploiting the idea that we envy those who have achieved fame." Anakin made a face. "With the equally charming dark side that we'll take joy in watching their failures."

He crossed his arms over his chest. "So today we'll be gossip mongers. Come up with a story about one of the people in this class, in the school, or on the island. It doesn't have to be true. It just has to be something that would get people's attention. Then pass it on. We'll see the ramifications of envy for ourselves."

He was kind of counting on the students choosing to start rumors about people they didn't like. He knew human nature that way.

River listened carefully, thinking to herself that sometimes the secrets that people hid in their minds were a lot more disturbing than any rumours. It did actually disturb her that the first person she thought about when it came to inventing rumours was Lee. Just inventing rumours in a class also seemed difficult. A smile appeared on her face when she thought about the reaction she might get if she was to come up with a rumour about the teacher, but then his mind didn't reveal anything to her, and she also had a distinct feeling it wouldn't be appreciated.

This week, there was no sleeping. Instead, John tried to figure out a way to both follow directions and annoy the teacher.

Sokka snorted as he took notes. He was beginning to suspect that Sifu Skywalker, although scary, didn't have a clue what he was talking about.

SOKKA certainly never stooped to listening to gossip or passing rumors. Or envying people. That just wasn't the sort of thing honorable warriors did.

Sora wasn't one to start rumors. Especially not about an annoying three foot talking duck.

It doesn't have to be true. It's better if it's not, generally. Pregnancy scares, dark secrets that may or may not have happened, people cheating...it's all up for grabs.

[OOC: Think of it like a game of telephone. Ping your character in to another's reply, mishear, repeat exactly, change names...you know, how a rumor works.]

It was all he could think of.
