Aly might have moved her desk to the corner of the room with the best sight lines.

No reason.

There were donuts but the coffee was long gone. Possibly because Aly drank it all.

The two dozen Madroxes turn as one, with donuts all in their collective mouths.

"You mean like flour?"

"She means us, dummy."

"GIVE US STUDY HALL OR GIVE US DEATH!"

"Or just give us studay hall. We're not that keen on death."

"Plus, I don't want Fraser to get on my back about bloodstains," Aly agreed.

"Does that mean that study hall is mine?" Jamie asked as he absorbed all the duplicates. "Or rather 'Madroxland'?"

"All yours until the end of the period," she said with a nod.

"But how am I supposed to mandate changes and social relief programs in such a short time period?" Jamie asked with a pout.

"Delegate," she replied instantly.

"But that would mean sharing my power!"

Aly raised an eyebrow. "Yes. Because you have no way to delegate without giving power to other people..."

"Yes but unfortunately I don't trust myself," Jamie said as he finished a donut. "It turns out I'm very unreliable."

"Sounds like a personal problem," she teased. "Maybe you should lay off the revolutions then. If you're that unreliable, you'll just end up on the way to the guillotine next."

"I'll have you know I'm a benevolent dictator," Jamie said waving a finger. "I'd only lash people forty times with a wet noodle."

"But will you give them cake?" she asked. "That's really what sways me."

"Actually that's one of my social reforms," Jamie replied. "I'd teach everyone to bake a cake. After all... give a guy a cake and he'll eat it and be hyperactive all afternoon. Teach him to bake one and he'll stop bothering you to give him more cakes."

"Impressive," Aly admitted. "If you can teach me how to bake a cake, I'll support you."

"Excellent!" Jamie said rubbing his hands together. "Now I just need to learn to bake."

"Better get on that then," Aly teased. "Period's over soon."

Jamie pouted. "Can I teach you next week?"

"I was really counting on learning today," Aly said with a long-suffering sigh.

"How about this... Buy a box of cake mix and follow the instructions?"

Aly laughed. "I already know how to do that."

Jamie put his hands on his hips and thrust out his chest, hero style.

"THEN MY WORK HERE IS DONE!"

She reached to pat him on the back. "Congratulations, Jamie. I'm impressed."
