Prophecy in Theory and Practice, Tuesday Second Period (10/09)

Tuesday, October 9, Second Period

The ususal breakfast goodies were laid out on the table. Additionally the seating was all arranged into pairs, with a table holding a small pot and two cups next to each pair.

"Today's class discussion is on the topic of scam artists and prediction. I'd like to hear your opinions on some of the following questions:

-Does charging money for telling fortunes affect the validity of a prediction?
-Do fortune-teller con artists harm the reputation of "real" seers?
-How can legitimate prophets and seers counteract the public perception of fortune-tellers as cons?"

Once the discussion was over, Aziraphale gave a brief lecture and presented some handouts on tea (and coffee) reading.

"Your in-class activity today is to read tea leaves or coffee grounds for yourself or -- preferably -- for a classmate. You may also want to get in some practice outside of class, as we will be using today's activity as the basis for a special project in a few weeks."

[ooc: Please wait for the OCD is up and class is in session.]

Chris was here and ready to perform his TAly duties.

Lana smiled at him a little ruefully. "Guess the half pill still doesn't work so well. Sorry."

"You don't have to apologize," Chris assured her. "I just wish there was something I could do to help."

Re: Talk to the TAs

[identity profile] lovelylana.livejournal.com 2007-10-09 02:32 pm (UTC)(link)
She shrugged. "I'll do the whole pill for a while even if it makes me really groggy. Eventually they'll get better. They... I've had them all my life. When I'm stressed they get worse. I don't think there's anything anyone can do. At least none of the high powered professionals my aunt sent me to ever found a way. I just hate waking you up."

"Does it help if you're not alone?" Chris asked.

She ducked her head. "It helped when I'd wake up and Jim or Shep was there, holding on to me. I felt safe with their arms around me. The nightmares weren't nearly as bad or as often. But that's not an option anymore."

Chris figured that it would be a bad plan to offer to help her like that.

"Well, if staying with me helps, you can continue to do so. Or if you'd rather get back to your own room, I could always crash there."

"Um... that might not... There's just the one bed," Lana said, blushing. "We kind of stuck them together."

Re: Talk to the TAs

"Oh... um... well," Chris stammered. "I could always sleep on the floor."

Re: Talk to the TAs

[identity profile] lovelylana.livejournal.com 2007-10-09 02:53 pm (UTC)(link)
"No, no, that's not fair to you," Lana said. "I should just get over it and stay there on my own."

Re: Talk to the TAs

"There's nothing wrong with needing some help," Chris said.

She shrugged. "I feel stupid enough about it as it is."

Andrew was there as well!

"Hey, man," Chris said. "How was your weekend?

Re: Talk to the TAs

[identity profile] wannabe-pan.livejournal.com 2007-10-09 05:57 pm (UTC)(link)
"Homecoming was pretty awesome," Andrew replied. "My feet still hurt from the dancing. Though that might have something to do with my shoes being about a size too small."

Re: Talk to the TAs

[identity profile] neurotic-witch.livejournal.com 2007-10-09 06:00 pm (UTC)(link)
"Yeah, I bet that would do it," Chris said. "But as long as you had fun."

[identity profile] wannabe-pan.livejournal.com 2007-10-09 07:44 pm (UTC)(link)
"How about you? Have a good weekend?" Andrew inquired.

Re: Talk to the TAs

[identity profile] neurotic-witch.livejournal.com 2007-10-09 07:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Chris nodded. "Yeah, got to hang out with a few folks."

Re: Talk to the TAs

[identity profile] wannabe-pan.livejournal.com 2007-10-09 07:47 pm (UTC)(link)
"Oh, so you have some, um, friends that came back this weekend?" Andrew had noticed a lot of new faces, but he hadn't really known any of them.

Re: Talk to the TAs

[identity profile] neurotic-witch.livejournal.com 2007-10-09 07:49 pm (UTC)(link)
"Yeah, my Fandom High big sister and my alternate universe mom."

Re: Talk to the TAs

[identity profile] wannabe-pan.livejournal.com 2007-10-09 07:53 pm (UTC)(link)
"Your alternate universe mom? Is that weird?"

Andrew got a very queer look on his face.

Re: Talk to the TAs

[identity profile] neurotic-witch.livejournal.com 2007-10-09 07:54 pm (UTC)(link)
"I guess a little," Chris admitted. "Since she's only a couple years older. But it's also kind of nice since I never knew my mom. One of my aunts graduated from here in May and another one is a student here now."

Re: Talk to the TAs

[identity profile] wannabe-pan.livejournal.com 2007-10-09 07:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Andrew got quiet. He rubbed his palms together, thoughtful.

"Do you think..." He didn't finish the statement, but sat there for a moment frowning.

Finally he said, "Never mind."

"What?" Chris asked.
