Fandom Invasions Class #5 (Thursday, period 3)

When the class filed into the Danger Shop today, they found themselves standing in ankle deep water. Looking further into the room showed the streets of Fandom, flooded with water much deeper than ankle depth.

"Good morning," John said, from his slightly raised -- and dry -- spot. "Last week, we saw how strange weather often leads to even stranger things. This week we're focusing on natural disasters, which in Fandom seem to be rarely natural, or the worst thing you have to worry about.

"We're an island so a spot of flooding may seem like a perfectly logical -- though sucky -- occurrance. But Fandom doesn't get just a flood." He gestured at the waterlogged streets. "More than just excess water's swept into town.

"For this class, I'd like you to pair up, and go exploring. Take with you only what you would if you woke up one morning and saw this outside your window -- the Danger Shop will create your requests if they are reasonable. See if you can find anything that might be a clue to why there's a flood -- they really shouldn't be too hard to spot." John smiled wolfishly. "Just try to not let any 'clues' wallop you."

He wouldn't be looking too far, would he? Because Claire came splashing up to him in galoshes and a yellow plastic rain coat.

"Hey," she said, as if they were in the middle of a conversation already, "do you think I can drown?"

Peter'd been hoping she'd join him. "Good question. Have you ever done things with breathing before?"

"No," Claire admitted. "But when I was dead I didn't breathe at all."

Which had to count for something, right?

"Good point," Peter said. "Still, body's got to want oxygen, right? So maybe you'd at least pass out?"

"Maybe. But most bodies have got to have lots of things mine doesn't, apparently."

She kicked at the ground, mostly to make a splash. "Let's not try it right now."

Jack looked around and saw Ami. He waved.

"I think so." She stomped her feet in her rain boots. "I am trying to remember if i was here for this one."

Valentine knew this one. Valentine had been here for this one. Valentine had spent the weekend hiding in the dorms.

The nice, safe dorms.

But he was perfectly willing to do the assignment here. Nothing was going to cause permanent damage here.

And so he waited for a partner.

Jenny decided the bloke in the mask looked likely. "Hi. Need a partner?"

The bloke in the mask decided that the blonde girl was just as good a partner as anyone else here, really.

"Absolutely," Valentine said with a nod. "I'm not terribly good with water."

He tended to do a great deal of flailing and sputtering.

"Right, well, we run into trouble, do yourself a favor and get the bloody hell out of the water quick as possible." After a pause to light a cigarette, Jenny added, "Ideally not by clinging to anything metal."

Valentine stared at her for a moment.

What did metal have to do with anything, anyhow?

"I can do that," he said nevertheless. After all, getting the heck out of any given place was one of many things he was very good at.

This seemed a little familiar after the floods of the summer.

Shawn looked around at all the water while he waited for someone to partner him.

"Still am," Shawn confirmed with a nod. "Want to explore a waterlogged town?"

"I avoided actually going out in it," Shawn said. "But yeah, I was. Not a big fan of wading around in muddy water."

Dib looked around for a partner, hopefully someone with a keen eye.

He didn't really know how to tell that by looking, though. How ironic.

Ankle deep on others was almost waist deep on Robin. He looked down and shrugged. "I don't need anything.
