Fandom Invasions Class #5 (Thursday, period 3)

When the class filed into the Danger Shop today, they found themselves standing in ankle deep water. Looking further into the room showed the streets of Fandom, flooded with water much deeper than ankle depth.

"Good morning," John said, from his slightly raised -- and dry -- spot. "Last week, we saw how strange weather often leads to even stranger things. This week we're focusing on natural disasters, which in Fandom seem to be rarely natural, or the worst thing you have to worry about.

"We're an island so a spot of flooding may seem like a perfectly logical -- though sucky -- occurrance. But Fandom doesn't get just a flood." He gestured at the waterlogged streets. "More than just excess water's swept into town.

"For this class, I'd like you to pair up, and go exploring. Take with you only what you would if you woke up one morning and saw this outside your window -- the Danger Shop will create your requests if they are reasonable. See if you can find anything that might be a clue to why there's a flood -- they really shouldn't be too hard to spot." John smiled wolfishly. "Just try to not let any 'clues' wallop you."

"Still," she agreed. "We'd probably fail the class if I drowned."

"I'd get fired as a TA," Peter said.

"Also not desirable," Claire acknowledged. "Guess we should stick to the assignment."

"Besides, I can use it to see how I'm doing with my powers," Peter said.

"Yeah, but the only powers you've got are mine," Claire pointed out. "And if I'm not allowed to drown, then you're not either."

"Ah, says you." It was a bit on the dramatic side, but since it was the easiest way to make a point Peter concentrated and produced a quick burst of flame. He aimed it right for the water, so that it vanished in a puff of steam.

Claire stared for a beat, then barked out a quick laugh.

"Hey, that's cool."

"Turns out I don't have to be next to somebody anymore," Peter said. He pulled on his TK to tug at Claire's hair without touching her. "Prue showed me."

"Hey," Claire objected, and she grabbed her hair to pull it away.

"Stop that."

Peter stopped and looked totally innocent.

Claire just gave him a sour look.

"Just don't. Not that."

Peter looked concerned. "Sorry," he said, geniunely feeling bad. "I didn't know it was something you didn't like."

Claire gave a small smile, shaking it off.

"No big," she says. "Bad experiences with guys who can do that."

"The guy who tried to kill you?" Peter guessed, pitching his voice low for privacy.

Still smiling, though not exactly looking happy, Claire nodded her head.

"Jesus," Peter said, pissed at himself. "Man, I am so sorry. Seriously."

He went to hug her if she'd let him.

She let him, for about a second, then she shook him off. But her smile was real this time, if slightly sad.

"It's OK, really."

"Don't suppose there's some way I could make it up to you?" Peter asked.

"Are you kidding?" Claire asked, skeptical. "You didn't know."

She jerked her head off in some random direction. "Shall we just do the exploration thing?"

"Okay," Peter said. He didn't want to push. "I'm here if you wanna talk."

"But not here, right?" Claire remarked, because they were still in the Danger Room.

"I could be anywhere if you wanted to talk," Peter said, amending his previous statement.

Claire smiled, looking down at her feet and up again.

"I know."
