Modern Feminism: From Susan B Anthony to Bea Arthur - Second Period - 10/03

Deadpool sat perched on his desk when the students arrived. And for some unknown reason, was beginning to feel like Wolverine when it came to other classes.

Hey, maybe they'd ask him to join the teacher version of the Avengers next! He'd say no, of course, being on that team means you automatically have to die the next time Wanda Maximoff goes nutso. No thanks on that.

"Morning kiddies!" Yes he was still in a good mood. It's surprising how much smackin' someone around can improve that. "Today we're doing something a liiiiiittle bit different. We've had a few classes now, and I've shown you pretty good examples of feminism in the past and present-" (Especially the pole dancing) "-now it's your turn. I want you to break into groups of an indeterminate number to come up with what you all think a good role model for the young women out there should be. Is it Tyra Banks? Wendy the Werewolf Stalker? Those adorable Olsen twins before they went to rehab and had eating disorders? It's aaaaalllll up to you kids to tell me."

"Well, I saved the world a lot. And I'm from this year, but prior to this year I was dead for seven years, so," Jenny shrugged. "These things happen."

If Evie hadn't been in Fandom for over a year, she would think the girl was shamming, but it was so much more likely to be the truth. "Really! How fantastic! I would say that makes you an excellent role model!" Evie reconsidered. "Well, except for the dying. I assume that was unavoidable. Unless it was lung cancer?"

"No, it was my expiration date. That is, natural causes. And overstretching myself, maybe. I'd just killed God, you see."

Eeep.

That would be Evie's brain breaking. "I beg your pardon?"

Jenny took a long drag off her cigarette and repeated, "I killed God." See? Great role model!

Evie blinked. "Why, exactly, is that a, ahem. Good thing? God? Creator of the world? Allah, protector..."

"Well, it was gonna destroy the world and all," Jenny said with a shrug.

"Well, that's all right then," Evie said weakly. Then put her head down on the desk. "Thank you? Um. God. Why? WHy?"

Jenny shrugged. "I didn't really ask, but the running theory was life on Earth was created accidentally and it was coming back to correct that."

Evie turned her head and asked, "Are you sure it was the God? Not just a possible, I don't know. Stand-in? Stunt double?"

"Closest thing to the God I've ever come across," Jenny said.

Evie found herself whimpering a bit again, and saying, just tentatively, "It couldn't be reasoned with? Negotiated with? Or anything?"

She just had this horrible feeling of karmic balance now permanently out of whack. Possibly abolished altogether.

"Well, no, it didn't think like we do--oh, cor, I've gone and given you a crisis of faith, haven't I? Bugger all." Jenny sighed. "Who do you think's a good role model?" she asked in a desperate attempt to change the subject.

"Oh, I'm not sure." Evie rubbed at her face, and tried to become coherent again. "Um. Dr. Covington? she was a teacher here. And an archaeologist." She gave Jenny a gobsmacked look, and added, "Um, my mother? Same thing. And, um... Gabrielle was a bard who recorded several Greek gods being killed." She took a breath. "It's just, you understand, that one's role models ought to have something one can emulate to them. I'm rather certain I could never kill a god. Or even someone pretending to be one."

heh.

"No, but maybe there are qualities there that people should emulate," Jenny said with a shrug.

Evie's brain was too blown by the god-killing to address the chutzpah of that statement, too preoccupied with trying to think how one would do that. "Weren't you scared?" she asked in a little voice. "Of what would happen?"

"I was scared I'd fail," Jenny said. "I knew when I was going to die, you see, so it didn't matter what happened to me. I just didn't want to take everybody else down with me."
