Modern Feminism: From Susan B Anthony to Bea Arthur - Second Period - 10/03

Deadpool sat perched on his desk when the students arrived. And for some unknown reason, was beginning to feel like Wolverine when it came to other classes.

Hey, maybe they'd ask him to join the teacher version of the Avengers next! He'd say no, of course, being on that team means you automatically have to die the next time Wanda Maximoff goes nutso. No thanks on that.

"Morning kiddies!" Yes he was still in a good mood. It's surprising how much smackin' someone around can improve that. "Today we're doing something a liiiiiittle bit different. We've had a few classes now, and I've shown you pretty good examples of feminism in the past and present-" (Especially the pole dancing) "-now it's your turn. I want you to break into groups of an indeterminate number to come up with what you all think a good role model for the young women out there should be. Is it Tyra Banks? Wendy the Werewolf Stalker? Those adorable Olsen twins before they went to rehab and had eating disorders? It's aaaaalllll up to you kids to tell me."

Katara grinned delightedly. "If my father had let me do that, I probably would have decided I wanted to be named penguinseal. So it could have been worse! And thank you. I think my mom named me that too. My brother used to make fun of it, but it's not that bad."

"I think my father thought it was precocious. It's cute when a five-year-old thinks she ought to be called something like Beauty. I'm not sure he'd have gone along with 'penguinseal'," Beauty laughed. "What's your brother's name? I haven't got any, only sisters."

"He's Sokka," she said. "He's really loud usually and has a ponytail on top of his head only he calls it a warrior's wolf tail." Katara paused. "And no, I have no idea why."

"Maybe he's read too many adventure tales," Beauty suggested. She had certainly been known to act under the influence of romantic notions brought about by her reading material.

"Do you have any ideas for the discussion topic? I'll warn you that all of my women role models will be pretty historical."

"Oh no, neither of us could read until we got here," Katara said, obviously seeing nothing strange in this. She tilted her head. "I don't really know any historical figures from this world. I'm sure any you pick would be good. But, maybe, Principal Washburn?"

"Oh! I'm sorry." She mostly meant that she was sorry for assuming. But probably also a little bit that she was sorry Katara and her brother hadn't known how to read. Beauty was pretty sure she'd have gone mad at an early age without her books.

She pondered Katara's suggestion, and then smiled. "A lady principal really is a good role model, isn't she? That's very rare where I come from. Actually, I don't think I know of a single example. I was going to say Queen Elizabeth, who was a very powerful figure from my history. And she did a lot of things that people didn't expect from women too, so in a way I guess Principal Washburn and Queen Elizabeth are something alike."

Katara shrugged. "We don't speak English at home. So it wouldn't be much use to us."

"Queen Elizabeth sounds familiar somehow. Maybe I saw a movie. She was a little bit like the Avatar Kyoshi wasn't she? A woman warrior and defended an island and such?"

"I'm not familiar with the Avatar Kyoshi, but I guess you could say Queen Elizabeth was a warrior of sorts," Beauty mused. "She didn't fight herself, but she ruled over the country and made all of the decisions about wars and alliances. And of course about how to take care of her people at home. She had a lot of enemies, but she was a lot more cunning than they were. By the time she died, the country she ruled -- the one I'm from, actually -- was the most powerful in the world."

Katara looked more guarded at that. "Did she conquer other countries then?"

Noting the guarded expression, Beauty wondered if there was something like that going on in Katara's home.

"You have to understand that everyone was fighting with each other over something at that time. A lot of what Elizabeth did was political, or continuations of conflicts that had been already going on. And there was a lot of dissent going on within her own kingdom, too, between opposing groups. It must have been a really dangerous time to live."
