Communication (Thursday, P5)

When the students arrived in the classroom they'd find it set up like a dining room with one long table and a variety of food set out. Bouncing slightly on the balls of his feet behind the chair at the head of the table, Bob gestured for everyone to take a seat, then held a finger up to his lips in an exaggerated 'Shhh!' motion.

Welcome to the quietest dinner party ever.

Who knows the sign language for 'pass the gravy, please?'

[[Sorry for the late. Anthropology is kicking my academic butt these days.]]

Hoshi found the silence rather familiar. This was just like eating dinner at home with her parents.

Carmela taps Hoshi on the shoulder before smiling and pointing to a salad within the other girl's reach. Hopefully she'd get the message.

In contrast to Hoshi, Carmela isn't very used to silent dinners, growing up with two siblings, one of whom was a younger brother. Still. She is giving it her best effort.

Cassandra was used to the silence. She'd spent the first eight years of her life living in it. But she understood other people didn't so she offered Carmela a friendly and supportive smile.

Jeff looked like something that was about to explode.

This was only mildly worse than usual.

Anemone was used to eating in silence, but that was because she had usually eaten alone before this year. Dining with other people was still odd.

She tried to catch the nervous-looking boy's attention. Hey! Can she one of those apples, please?

Naminé looked over with concern, raising an eyebrow. She placed a hand on her forehead, then one on her stomach, wincing. Was he sick?

Andrew couldn't help but stare at Jeff and think back to his run in with Turtle (http://community.livejournal.com/fandomtownies/2101675.html?thread=93178027#t93178027) earlier in the day.

Jack's ready to eat a bit of everything on the table. He starts with those closest to himself, and branches out to whoever he can catch eye contact with. Hey. Hey, you, with the stuffing? Can...you pass that over?

Hoshi was trying to interpret Jack's gestures. Was he talking to her? She pointed at herself and waited for his response.

Not a chatty eater to begin with, John didn't foresee a problem with this assignment.

With no thought to the possible consequences, Andrew took a spoon full of mashed potatoes and flicked them across the table at John.

Naminé found it easier to eat in silence, all things considered. She looked around to see who was the closest to the mashed potatoes that she might be able to make eye contact with.

Chris shrugged and started to fill his plate. He was more than happy to sit here and eat in silence.

Demyx looked around at everyone, vaguely confused until it finally clicked. "Oh! I get it!"

Naminé walked up to Bob after class, thinking. She mimed washing a dish, then pointed to herself, eyebrows raised in a question.

It was only polite.

I miss anthropology. Only a little. Tiny, teensy bit. The part without the articles.

The part where I get to people watch for assignments is awesome. The rest . . . not so much.
