Library [09/27]

Despite the party at Caritas the night before, Bridge is miraculously not hung over when he comes to open the library in the morning. Or... not so miraculously, since he knew he'd have to be up early today.

The library is open!

Of course, not being hungover doesn't mean he's also not *sleepy*, which is why he's still got the usual absurdly large coffee that he's working on during first period.

Hoshi was there, bright and early, ready to tackle more Russian verbs.

Bridge waves cheerfully to the girl he hasn't met yet and bounces over. "Hi! Do you need help with anything? Or... maybe not, you do look like you came pretty prepared, after all. Uh. Hi!" Bridge breaks off after realising he's repeated his greeting.

All the cheerfulness and bouncing was making Hoshi nervous. She thought he was nearly as bad as Miss Connell over at the hotel. "I just need some books on Russian grammar. One of the other library aides showed me some on Tuesday."

"I can do that!" Bridge says with a nod... which quickly turns into a frown as he notices the French books arranged by cover colour, and makes a mental note to fix that later. "I'm, uh. Bridge Carson, by the way. Very nice to meet you!"

"Hoshi Sato," she replied. "Your roommate is the one with the blue hair, right?"

"Anders, yeah," Bridge grins, running a hand through his own hair self-consciously. "Mine was green until it washed out a few days ago."

"He mentioned you were from the future too," said Hoshi.

"Yep!" Bridge bounces. "Not *too* far in the future, it's only 2022 where I'm from, but that's far enough to make a difference. Especially when I think those of us from the future are far outnumbered by those from the past or from different worlds entirely."

"I'm from 2144, which is a bit further down the line," said Hoshi.

"Just a little," Bridge admits. And then, because he's curious since the handful of other people he's met from the future seem to all be from *very* different realities, he asks, "what's it like, in your time?"

"Well, about 80 years before I left my time, there was a man in Montana who built a ship that could travel faster than light," said Hoshi. "It attracted the attention of a ship from a planet called Vulcan and they landed on Earth to meet him. Since that first contact with the Vulcans, we've managed to wipe out hunger, poverty, and war on Earth."

"Okay, that's... definitely different from my time," Bridge admits. "Aliens have been *attacking* my version of Earth on and off for about thirty years now," and okay, sometimes it was demons, and sometimes it was mutants, but really, mostly? Aliens. So he didn't get in to that. "A few years after I was born, though, people from other planets started moving there. We... haven't done so well with the hunger and poverty thing," he frowns, thinking of Z. "But SPD is doing well, so far, with handling threats from intergalactic criminals."

"Wow," said Hoshi. "It sounds totally different from what's going on in my world. I'm not surprised, though," said Hoshi, lowering her voice. "Something seemed odd when I first found out what year it is here, so I did some research on recent history. The world I come from went through a major war in the late 1990s. Nothing like that has happened here."

"And the alien attacks started in the 90s, for my world," Bridge muses. "Must be something about that decade," he suggests only half-seriously.

"This place is just weird," groaned Hoshi.

"Oh, but that's why I like it!" Bridge beams at her.

"How long have you been a student here? Does it get better after the first semester?" asked Hoshi.

"I've been here since the school first opened, going on my third year now," Bridge says. "The weirdness doesn't go away, but you will get used to it."

Bridge spends second period putting away some returns.

River stopped by the library after class to return some books. Noticing Bridge, she waved cheerfully.

"Hey!" Bridge waves back. "Haven't talked to you in a while."

"Haven't replied to nonexistant talking," River replied with a laugh. "Has life been interesting?"

"That's good," Bridge says with a nod. "The not replying to nonexisting talking thing. Though do thoughts count as talking? Sometimes I reply to those even if I don't mean to. But not yours, specifically, as of late. Life's been... interesting is the right word, I think. At least, classes are interesting. Very useful stuff." And then there's the emails from home, which are more puzzling than anything.

"Sometimes talking without getting a response is useful, but that's an exception." River nodded. "Complicated home issues?"

"Caught that, huh?" Bridge grins sheepishly. "I'm not entirely sure, there's just the fact that Doctor Manx has emailed Z and I twice in the space of a month. Which is... more frequent than any communication from SPD last year."

"Good or bad doctor?" River asked. "Not leaving?"

"She's definitely one of the good guys," Bridge nods. "I don't think we're going to have to leave, at least. I mean, we thought maybe she or the Commander might pull us out if they knew the school had exploded, so we didn't say anything about that, but then she said she knew about it all along, so I guess that worry was for nothing."

River gave a nod in reply. "They don't tell you everything, then." She smiled a little. "Parker told me she'd talked to you."

"Yup." Bridge nods in reply. "In case... in case something happens, like back in February, on that planet." He hadn't been directly involved in the bar fight, but he'd witnessed enough of it.

River reached out and placed her hand on his arm. If it happens again, promise you'll use it.

Bridge looks River in the eye solemnly. I hope I won't ever have to, but if I need to, I won't hesitate.

She replied with a quick smile, relieved to leave the subject. "The Acorn is flying again."

[Bedtime!]

"Oh, *dude*, that's awesome!" Bridge bounces. "So you found fuel? And you've done a test flight? How did it hold up?"

"Anakin helped me repair it and find fuel." River looked quite proud. "Did a test flight with Rose. Spin around Earth."

*Someone* has rearranged a section of the language textbooks by colour, so Bridge is putting them back in the proper order.

Hooray for lunch! Nobody except the librarian or other library aides is allowed in here right now.

After lunch, Bridge is studying this week's notes and copying them over much more neatly.

Now he's tidying up and making sure there's no other arranged-by-cover-colour sections on the shelves.

This has been a crazily long week. *clings to day off and hopes it never ever ends*
