Alternative Tactics, First Period Wednesday, 26/09

They were back in an ordinary classroom today. Kerrigan had a projector lined up with some top-down images of last week's sim. "Last week, we ran the Antiga Prime scenario. When this situation came to be in reality, the lieutenant in charge made certain that advance scouts here," she pointed at the projected image, "Took out the scanners before the stealth unit arrived on the scene. Upon reaching the base, they took out the scanner here," another point, "Allowing the stealth unit to safely pass through an otherwise potentially hazardous series of bunkers and heavy artillery, securing the objective and turning the enemy's guns back on themselves."

She clicked the projector off. "Today, we concentrate on enemy defenses and how to breach them for just such a tactic. Deploy your teammates according to skill and terrain. A stealth unit is extremely vulnerable when seen, but can otherwise secure single targets unhindered. Ordinary assault units such as marines can find and take out obstructions that would keep an infiltrant from reaching the target. Teamwork is the name of the game at all times, kids."

Shoving the projector out of the way, she walked forward just enough to be able to lean against the desk. "Every defensive line has a weak spot. Every base has something that could be of tactical use to you. Know your terrain, know your opponent, and most importantly, know your team. Deploy them as scouts in areas that correspond to their particular strengths: find scanners early and keep an eye out. Also important? Get in and get out."

The projector went back on - it was pointing elsewhere now, the image corresponding with what had seemed to be random lines on the blackboard. "This is the enemy line. Note the heavy artillery located here and the marine support here. If you run your stealth unit past this point, you can safely bypass the heavy artillery, take out the marines, and then return to disable what stands in the path of your team. Run it past this point, on the other hand..." She drew a circle on the board, "And the scanners catch you. Run it by this point," another circle, "And it becomes impossible to clear the area. Your unit will be able to get in, but should their power run out, they'll be stranded with no backup."

She went on for a little while. Finally, Kerrigan turned the projector back off, crossed her arms, and smirked at the class. "Now it's your turn. What did you learn about enemy defenses last week? What would you have done differently? And what do you think'll keep anyone else from biting you in the ass right back?"

"Chat happy, chat well, kids, you've got your module exam next week."

[ OCD UP! / boring class today, but you gotta have your slow weeks ]

"Have you tried the 'pretend to be a prisoner transfer' thing?" Luke chirped.

"No." Molly shook her head. "We've never been in a situation where something like that would work."

"How about the 'find the back door' approach?"

"Yep. Back doors are good."

Luke grinned. "That's when local intelligence comes in handy," he said.

"Yes. And someone who can hack into a computer and find building plans."

"And someone who knows explosives," Luke added with a wry smile, "just in case."

Molly nodded. "How did you do in the exercise last week?"

"handwavily, woe Fine," Luke said with a larger smile. "You?"

Molly smiled back. "I got to throw Lee Adama," she said. "It was awesome."

He let out a low whistle. "Nice."

"Probably not what the lieutenant intended, but it worked."

"I've always found it's better to go with what works over what they had in mind," Luke said with a smile. "Leia wasn't exactly thrilled with my plan for meeting the Emperor."

"Did she have a different plan?"

Re: Discuss

"It wasn't a plan so much as a 'DON'T'," Luke said ruefully.

"Was the emperor a bad guy then?" Molly knew more than most about Anakin, but there was a lot she hadn't been told.

"The worst," Luke said vehemently. "He made Darth Vader look conflicted and unsure of his path."

"Yikes," Molly said. "Your plan worked though, right? I mean, you're here."

Luke nodded. "It worked."
