"Good morning, ladies and gentlemen," Lulu began, smiling. "I'd like to start off our class today by announcing a small change to the syllabus: at the present time, all of the scheduled classes are remaining the same, but the order in which they will occur has changed. The class on sexual safety has been moved to today, pushing the class on foreplay until next week; it will be followed by a small examination, covering the classes to date, and then after the mid-term break we will begin discussing sex with partners.

"Today's lecture," she continued, turning now to the subject at hand, "will cover two forms of sexual safety. One has the intention of controlling -- or preventing -- conception, while the other has the intention of protecting oneself from infections that can be transmitted sexually." She went on to discuss birth control, first discussing how various methods had been used historically, and then discussing some of the more modern methods -- with particular focus on barrier methods, especially condoms.

"The reason I put the emphasis on condoms," Lulu continued, "is because not only are they one of the more effective -- although, as I said, not the most -- methods of birth control, they're one of the few methods that also act as a barrier against infection. Unfortunately, they're not perfect; condoms need to be used properly to provide the most effective protection against both pregnancy and infection, and even then do have something of a failure rate. Still, they do provide excellent protection, especially in cases where no other precautions have been taken, and are the most effective method of preventing infection other than abstinence, or performing only sexual acts that involve minimal contact and no penetration.

"What I'd like for you to do today is to pair up and discuss the various methods of birth control that are available, as I discussed; also, if there are other methods available that you are familiar with, such as methods available in other worlds worlds, feel free to discuss those as well, especially in comparison to the methods I've brought up."

"Well, some of the college boys use 'em, but they're rich. The gal can't get pregnant if you don't...y'know," he said authoritatively. "And she can't if she's on top or if she jumps after. Like jumping jacks."

"Are you serious?" She tilted her head at him and boggled a bit. "Erm, I don't think it works that way."

"I don't see why not. 's the way things are done." he stated.

"I don't think that's not how it works. Are you human? I thought you were a human, but if you're not, maybe that's how it works for your species." she studied him intently. "Are you really sure?"

"Of course I'm human. You think I'm not human? I bet you're not human, for asking if I am." Logic? What logic? "And I'm sure that's how it works," he said, confident as a man who only hears about these things from others can be.

"What tipped you off? The pink hair? Or the purple and red eyes?" Anemone tipped her head again in an oddly bird-like gesture. "I started human. Now I'm more. Is that a problem?"

"I still don't understand how that works. MISS LULU!" Anemone waved her hand energetically. "I have a question!"

Jack slumped in his seat. "It works. Guys back home swear by it."

And then tried to grab her waving hand. "Hey! Stoppit! You tryin' to get me in trouble?" he said through his teeth.

"Why would you get in trouble? I just want to know how it works, I'm curious." she blinked at him, astonished that he would just grab her like that. "We're supposed to ask questions. Now, remove your hand, please."

He released her hand in the "look, I'm unarmed" pose. "Um. Okay."

He may have mumbled something like "I wanna know how it works, too."

Lulu had, in fact, already been contemplating coming over, having overheard some of the... assumptions that were being thrown around, but she waited so as to see if the students would ask, rather than forcing her to approach them. So, with that opening, she came over.

"Yes, Anemone?" she asked, smiling softly. "What is it I can help you with?"

"Jack says girls don't get pregnant if she's on top, or if, um, she exercises after? Is that right?" she looked at Jack for confirmation. "How does that work? Does it work?"

"It doesn't, in fact," Lulu said. "Both of those are myths, with no basis in reality -- although they are also two of the more prevalent myths, so it's certainly nothing against you, Jack, that you're familiar with the idea."

Anemone sighed dejectedly. "Bummer. Um, are there lots of myths like that? Things that don't work that people think do?"

"Yes," Lulu said, casting through her memory for an example. "If you'd like, I can see about putting together a list for you."

"Would you? That would be wonderful, thank you!" she would bounce, but that might tip the desk. "I was going to try looking things up in the computer, but I'm not very good at it. I wouldn't know what was true and what isn't."

Jack was being quiet, slowly turning red and trying not to stare at Lulu's....lulus.
