Combined Mathematics #3 [Friday 9-21, Period 4]

"There are," Jean-Paul began his lecture today, "about as many kinds of numbers as you might care to think of. There are real numbers, imaginary numbers, perfect numbers, rational and irrational numbers, positive and negative numbers, and of course, prime numbers." He actually smiled at the class then. "Are you confused yet?"

"Today, I would like everyone to pair up, except we have an odd number of students on the roster--ah, that's another type of numbers, odd and even ones--so there will have to be one group of three if everyone is present. One of you will supply a number, and the other will figure out which categories it belongs in. I have provided information sheets to help you if you are unsure. Or you may simply figure out whether numbers are prime or not, either game is acceptable to me."

AMi handed in her worksheet. Everything on it was neat and correct.

Naomi handed in her worksheet. She had gotten everything on it correct.

[personal profile] smartestone 2007-09-21 01:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Hermione was very glad she'd studied up for this class. All right, she'd known this part, but still, it was good to feel more confident.

[personal profile] smartestone 2007-09-21 01:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Hermione's worksheet was entirely correct, and written out very neatly.

Hermione actually thought math games sounded interesting. She would.

Charlie handed hers in with some trepidation. The work was neat, and most of it was right-- but the she'd confused the rules on the last two problems. Stupid Associative Rules.

Charlie gave Rodney an amused look, and said, "8191?"

She was wearing the really great new scarlet leather jacket she'd gotten from Tink for burning things, and was hoping he'd notice. Failing that, maybe he'd help with this week's homework anyway.

...no. -101.

Notes, Seton. Adah was trying to make as many of them as she could in Japanese.

Re: Talk to the Teacher/Hand in Worksheets

[identity profile] ecirpnellehada.livejournal.com 2007-09-21 03:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Adah turned her triple, quadruple, quintuple checked worksheets in. All the answers were correct, and there were quotes relating the equations to philosophy in the margins.

...Adah had too much time.

Re: Fun With Numbers

[identity profile] ecirpnellehada.livejournal.com 2007-09-21 03:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Adah mostly just started playing the math games against herself; if anyone wanted to join in and take over for herself, that was their prerogative, but she would have to wonder if they were aware of what they were getting into.

Re: Fun With Numbers

[identity profile] dude-its-jude.livejournal.com 2007-09-21 03:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Imaginary numbers are not the same as irrational numbers? How could numbers be imaginary, anyway? They were numbers, right, and so they had to exist . . .

Jude slouched down in his chair and tried to stop thinking.

Ronan's worksheet was precisely filled out, and while there may have been one or two errors when it comes to his use of limits, they might appear more to be the fault of haste, rather than any deficiency of skill.

"No," Jude sighed honestly, but straightened up and reached for his papers. He looked up at Ronan and abruptly blushed, remembering the last time he had seen him.

Ronan noticed the blush, but didn't comment, instead trying to decide on a number. "Um. Do you want to just go with prime/not-prime?"

Re: Fun With Numbers

"Yup." Ronan grinned. Math might possibly be a little bit his thing. "You're doing great."

Re: Fun With Numbers

[identity profile] dude-its-jude.livejournal.com 2007-09-21 10:58 pm (UTC)(link)
"Thanks," Jude said with just a touch of dryness invading his mellow. He tried to think of any prime numbers he knew, and had a feeling that Jen would be able to recite them up to, like, a hundred (which totally wasn't prime, he knew that much). "Fifty . . . seven?"

Bart turned in his homework. It might possibly have been done as soon as he heard it was due during class today.

He wasn't procrastinating! Really! There was just this new game and the graphics were soooo awesome and he couldn't say no to playing it and...

Well, at least most of the answers were correct?

Peter's worksheet looked rushed as if he hadn't looked at it until about an hour ago. It was all correct, but the penmanship was atrocious.
