Distract her from the exploding mammals!

"Morning!" Thursday called as she entered, heading in the direction of her office.

Mac broke away from the tales of Colin the sheep, enough to wave a greeting to Thursday as she came in. "Morning," she returned.

"Everything going well?"

Mac nodded leaning forward on the desk. "Haven't had anything too tough yet," she said. "It's been pretty quiet so far."

"Glad to hear it. If there's anything you need, I'm usually in my office during the day or on call. The other aides are happy to help out as well."

"Thanks." Mac smiled over the desk. "I'll make sure to call you, or them, or someone if I have a problem."

"Then I'll leave you to it. I'm just here to pick something up and then I'll be out of your hair. I promised my son we'd go to the beach today."

"Okay." Mac grinned. "Enjoy your day, I'm sure I'll be fine here."

For the aides and librarian if they're around. She'll probably share her vegan sugar cookies.

She's giving that book a rest, and has taken up a guide to C programming instead.

Dr. Wilson had said she should brush up on her Latin. So that was what Beauty intended to do. And since she didn't have any Latin texts in her small collection, she planned to ask someone in the library for help.

She was somewhat distracted from this plan when she walked in and saw all the books.

"This can't be real..."

Glancing up from the desk, and seeing the girl, Mac stood up to see if she needed anything.

She wandered over, craning her neck to see if there was something in particular she was missing, an invasion of something perhaps. "Usually is," Mac said after a moment, still not quite sure what she was staring at.

"All of these books are for the students to use?" Beauty asked, sounding a little breathless at the idea. "Or...or are there restrictions. I didn't ask for permission to come down here, I hope that's all right. Should I have talked to one of the professors first?"

Although it didn't seem like the girl was planning on kicking her out.

"No, you're good," Mac replied gesturing towards the shelves. "Everything except the books in special collections are yours to use, and I really don't think you want to go in there anyway."

"First time down here, huh?"

"Special collections," Beauty murmured, nodding. Of course she wanted to go in there, but there was plenty right here to keep her busy for a good long while.

She turned and smiled at the other girl. "Yes. I was hoping for some Latin textbooks. One of my teachers said I should brush up on it. I just hadn't expected all of...this." Beauty gestured toward the stacks.

Mac grinned. "It's pretty impressive," she agreed. "Expecially if you're not used to it."

"Year and a half at this school, and I'm only just starting to get used to this library now I help out here."

"Oh, it must be wonderful to work here," Beauty replied. "I brought a few books with me, but they're all ones I've read before. I think I'm going to have to be strict with myself about eating and going to classes, now that I know this is here, though."

"Eating and going to class, both really good ideas," Mac agreed.

"One of the great things about books is the portability," Mac added. "Take them with you when you go for food and class." Yep, there she goes corrupting the new kids with her bad habits.

Beauty stared. "I can take the books away from here? I mean, I can take them with me, back to my room, and keep them until I'm done with them?"

"So long as you get a library card and check them out with me," Mac replied with a little nod.

"That's.. part of the point of a library," she added. "You must be new."

"Very new," Beauty nodded. "And still getting used to the way things are done here. I would like one of those cards, please, if I could."

Finally remembering her manners, she stuck out her hand and added, "I'm Beauty Huston. And you'll probably being seeing me a lot, if you run the library."

"I'm Mac," she introduced in return, taking the offered hand for a brief shake. "And I just look after the place on a Saturday," she added as she turned to go and find a card application form and a pen.

"It's nice to meet you, Mac." Beauty took the time Mac was getting the application to turn around in a slow circle and take in the library a little more fully.

Mac grinned holding out the application form for her. "Nice to meet you too," she said, pulling a pen out of her jeans pocket to give to her along with it.

"Where are you from, anyway?" she asked, a little amused at the girl's amazement. Not many people were that impressed with libraries.

"Blue Hill," Beauty replied, a little absently, as she finished her slow spin. "It's in England, about two and a half centuries ago, I think."

She turned her attention back to Mac and took the application and pen. Which was one of those pens with the ink all inside of it already, that she'd seen in class. And was now determined she needed to get for herself. "I had books at home, when we lived in the city, but not this many. And I wasn't allowed in the library at the university."

"Wow." Mac shook her head slowly. "Never will get this time travel stuff."

"I never had anything like this number of books at home either," she said. "But, I at least I had access to the city library sometimes."

"I always wanted to attend university," Beauty said, as she carefully filled in the application. "I suppose this is the closest I'll ever get, so I'm grateful for the chance. We always had tutors before, my sisters and I. This is the first time I've been in a real school."
She handed the form to Mac and asked, "Where are you from?"

"California," Mac told her, leaning back against the front desk.

"It... must be really really odd for you," she said thoughtfully. "To be here. Whole different attitude like that."

"It's unusual," Beauty agreed. "But so far it seems mostly...good. The classes are a little strange, and I don't know how I got registered for one of them, but from what I've seen, I'm not the only student here from someplace else. So that's nice to know. Makes it a little less daunting."

She cocked her head curiously at Mac. "Where is California? Here in America, I suppose?"

"Here in America." Mac pointed vaguely. "A few thousand miles that way," she explained.

"That classes are weird even from someone who comes from this country, this century," Mac said with a huff of amusement.

"You've come quite a distance!" Beauty couldn't imagine that kind of a trip. The one from the city to Blue Hill had been miserable enough.

She laughed at Mac's remark. "I'm glad to hear it isn't just me, then. I like to think that I'm pretty adaptable."

"I have a class in communication from a guy I've never actually heard speak, and a class in feminism with a crazy dude in a mask." Mac shrugged, "And that's.... kind of normal around here. Which is really the scary part."

Beauty grinned. "I thought you looked familiar! I'm in the feminism class too. I've just been trying to keep quiet, because the masked professor? Is really strange. Not as strange as my professor who teaches the class on...courting advice or something. He has these ideas about clothes and chickens that's just...not right."

"I think keeping quiet, with that guy, probably really wise." Mac pulled a face, "He made me do America's Next Top Model when I got forced into detention last year."

She paused suddenly, realising there was something she missed at the end there... "Chickens and courting advice?"

"I don't know what America's Next Top Model is, but I'm sure that I don't want to have to do it." Which meant keeping a low profile in her feminism class. Beauty was grateful to Mac for the warning.

"I think it sounds just as odd as you do. It's this class that purports to be about love and relationships, but the professor has this horribly cynical view of things and is absolutely obsessed with clothes. I tried to explain to him that I shouldn't be in the class, and he told me to wear some kind of suit of clothes that was made for chickens. It didn't make any sense. I think he might be touched in the head."

"I... think you might be right." Mac frowned, trying to work out what on earth could be going on in his head. She shook herself slightly, probably best not to think about it too hard.

"I'd recommend not taking his advice... or Professor Deadpool's for that matter."

"Oh, I don't plan to," Beauty agreed. "Not that I actually expect to be needing it anyway. I'll keep that in mind about Professor Deadpool too. Although so far the only advice I've gotten from him is that I need to say my name more 'strongly', whatever that means."

Well, she figured that was better than being told to be fierce... "I have no idea." Mac shook her head. "But I wouldn't think it's anything important."

"At the least the class material seems interesting, though. And it's made me realize that I have a lot of reading to catch up on. I suppose that means I should add some history books to my list, along with the Latin, doesn't it?"

"Might be an idea," Mac agreed, giving a slight nod. "The history should be back a couple of rows over there," she said pointing vaguely. "And Latin, probably with the languages in aisle three, somewhere in the middle."

One day, she'd get the exact terminology and placement explanation down. Today was not that day.

The slightly vague directions only gave Beauty an excuse to have to wander around in the library. She was not about to complain.

"Thank you for your help, Mac," she said, with a pleased grin as she headed into the stacks. "And it was nice meeting you!"

"Been nice meeting you too," Mac replied. "You need anything else, just come and ask me."

Apologies for the lateness. Got rather distracted moving house.
