Love Smart: Period 2, Week 2

Barney leaned against the whiteboard while the students took their seats. “So. Relationships. Whatever. Today we’re going to focus on the getting part of the relationship for the benefit of those of you who need a hook-up or who wish to trade up,” he announced with a grin. Yeah, he listened to the radio. It was great entertainment.

“For those of you who missed my legendary summer workshop, How to Be Awesome, here is a list of pick up lines to try on your own time. I also have video of your classmates' greatest hits in my office should you need a visual reference. Keep in mind these pick up lines were designed with the hot and dirty in mind. Not the deeply emotional relationships you teens seem intent on having." That last bit might have been sarcastic and accompanied by wide, grossed-out eyes.

"Now that that bit of business is taken care of, let's discuss how and why we choose our significant others."

"Couples: Why did you select your partner as 'The One' for you? Was it for their looks? Because hell yeah, you want someone you can stand to stare at for days on end. Was it for their money? Because of... feelings?" He looked at them sadly, because really, they should be out there having meaningless sex. It was a tragedy.

Focusing in on those lucky enough to be without an SO, Barney addressed the class studs loners. "Singles: How and where do you find a mate? Any alternatives to finding 'The One'? Let's discuss!"

[ooc: Wait for OCD is up! The questions are open to all for reply and discussion! Go Swarley!]

"Well when looking for the one, I figured that the one had been on the run for ninety minutes. Average foot speed over uneven ground barring injuries is 4 miles-per-hour. That gave me a radius of six miles. Then I had every duplicate do a hard-target search of every gas station, residence, warehouse, farmhouse, henhouse, outhouse and doghouse in that area. With Checkpoints go up at fifteen miles."

Karal wasn't sure about the validity of the question. Since he also wasn't sure about the validity of the class, he answered it anyway.

"I am not sure there can be a one. As time passes, people change and love changes with it." He paused, then added, "Unless the two people are lifebonded. A lifebonded pair are together until death."

"I think 'The One' chose me." That was her answer and she was sticking to it.

Okay.

"He's funny, sexy, smart in that blonde way." She was blonde too. So? "Did I mention funny?"

Dick didn't really think guys got to choose the one. He thought chicks just chose for them. Or maybe he was just used to being ordered around by his girlfriends and Logan.

He shrugged. "I don't know. A mix of them all, I guess? Except money. I don't really need money."

Andrew mumbled something about fruity drinks and bartenders while looking thoroughly dazed and daydreamy.

"I don't think you choose, I think you just know when the right person has come along. And for some people, that never happens. There isn't a perfect match for everyone."

"In a common room," Willow said. "He offered me a cookie. I felt this was an excellent start. I was later proven right when offers advanced to the level of cupcakes."

"In the common room. And because she was brilliant and lovely and doesn't mind me being old-fashioned about things." He paused. "Most of the time."

"There's no real choice involved. You find 'The One' by getting lucky," Jim said. "Not in that sense. But, you know, sometimes when things work out just right it happens."

Jim paused before giving a small laugh. "And then other times when you think everything has worked out just right, you still fall flat on your face. And you find them wherever. Common room, a cabin, a dance. No telling where."

"I think when someone treats you with respect and looks at you a certain way, you just know you've chosen the one," Summer explained. "And I think I have."

Shawn grinned across at her from his desk. "You think?" he teased. "I am obviously not trying hard enough."

Molly shrugged. "If they really are 'The One', you don't really get to pick, do you?"

"My one was sort of chosen for me, since she's my roommate," Sam said. "I think we would have found each other even if we hadn't been living together though, since we take a lot of the same classes and have a lot of the same interests."

Dawn grinned over at Sam. "The office put us in a room together, so I guess we met when I found out he wasn't named Samantha."
