Keeping Your Wits About You... [Monday 2nd Period 10-11] Class # 2
As the students made their way in to the classroom today, they would find a tray stacked with all sorts of breakfasty type treats and of course, coffee, tea and water for anyone who would like to have a quick bite to eat while Wilson was lecturing.
The doctor himself greeted everybody with an easy smile from where he was leaning against the desk, sipping on his own cup of coffee.
Lecture:
"Good morning," he began once everyone was settled. "Today I want to talk a little bit about the idea of survival kits. I want to focus more on the function of what you find in a standard survival kit than the idea of the kits themselves. After all, this isn't really a wilderness class."
Grinning, he walked over to an overhead projector and flipped it on. Everybody could be thankful now that he wouldn't be forcing them to read his handwriting!
"So, what is a survival kit?" He began, putting the first slide up on the projector. "Let's go over the various basics and different items you find for different situations."
He spent quite a bit of time going over the details of what was in the kit. The emphasis was not on how to make up an actual kit but the function of each of the enclosed eithers, shelter, warmth, food gathering, water gathering and how covering these needs for the body were vital in an emergency situation.
"Okay, for a few of you, keeping warm ... altering your environment to your needs is not so much of a challenge as the rest of us," Wilson said with a grin and he changed out the slide on the projector.
"This next slide, is a rather handy way to think of things, though knowing our student body I'll be the first to agree that the first one doesn't apply quite as stringently as it might to most."
S.T.O.P
S - Stop/Stay put.If you realize that you are lost, stay where you are. Wilson has obviously struck through the basic definition and added a note of his own 'For this class, think of this as simply Stop, take a deep breath and try not to react without thinking.
T - Think. Don't panic. If you panic, you will make poor decisions. Most people will make their situation worse if they panic.
O - Observe. Observe your surroundings and try to find some things that will help you out.
P - Plan. When you're thinking clearly, you can make a plan to survive.
Turning off the slide projector, he turned on the lightswake up everyone and stop making out and headed back to his desk.
Class Assignment
"For today's class assignment, I want you to pick one of the following scenarios -and yes to a few of you these will sound awfully familiar- and the challenge is this. You are caught in your dorm room when one of these emergencies occures. You're free to pick which one.
I want you to come up with three things in your dorm room that would help you handle and overcome the situation. I want you to list the three items, tell me their everyday use and then how you propose to adapt them to help you handle the chosen emergency. Any questions? Feel free to come up to see me at my desk."
The List!
1.Zombies invade the island, looking for brains.
2.The island is sunk into a deep freeze and there are snow monsters everywhere
3.There is a flood on the island and everything is rapidly sinking under water
4.The environmental controls in the school go haywire and it's 100+ degrees in your dorm room.

Re: Class Assignment
"I pick scenario number two. The island is sunk into a deep freeze and there are snow monsters everywhere."
"Number one: I would use my firesuit; it comes in pretty handy when I tend to light myself on fire, otherwise I would just be standing around naked because my clothes would burn off my body." He sort of smirked here.
"Number two: I would use myself in which I think I'm pretty useful everyday. I can warm anyone up if they're cold, pop my own popcorn... and well, snow and fire do not mix."
"Number three: I would light myself, fly out my dorm room window and start torching the snow son's of bi -- er, I would melt all abdominal snow creatures and get rid of the deep freeze with my fire abilities."
Re: Class Assignment
Finally, she picked number one.
"The first item I would take is the telephone, which I would use to call for help. Because I don't think I'd be very good at repelling an invasion of anything all on my own.
"Second, I would take apart one of the chairs to make a club. Because zombies sound like the kind of monster that you ought to have a weapon to defend against.
"And then third, I would take the small box with the blinking numbers. I'd set it up someplace where the zombies could see it and be distracted by the blinking and then I'd push the little switch that makes such a horrible noise, which would frighten the zombies, causing them either to become confused or run away."
Re: Class Assignment
"Okay, if zombies invaded the island, the three items I would use to help me handle the emergency are the Book of Shadows, which is my family's spellbook. It has two practical uses. One would be looking up a spell to get rid of the zombies. Failing that, it's big and heavy, so I could hit the zombies with it.
Second would be my radio, to keep apprised of the situation. Also good for hitting zombies.
And third would be my desk chair. I could prop it against the door knob to keep the zombies out or break it and use the pieces to kill zombies."
Re: Class Assignment
"I am picking the first scenario because the zombies would probably want my brain, knowing my luck," said Hoshi, wincing.
"So, first, I have this communications device in my room that seems pretty antique, but at least I can use it to call for help. Or I could use it as an offensive weapon since it's pretty heavy."
"Second, I have one of these," she added, holding up a pencil. "Its main purpose is as a writing utensil but it has a sharp point and could probably be used to poke someone's eyes out in an emergency."
"And third, I have my voice. I can make a lot of high-pitched vocalizations that the zombies could find disruptive, unless they're hard of hearing," said Hoshi, frowning. "In which, I can just call for help."
Re: Class Assignment
"The first item I would use is a hair dryer. Not only could I use it to make my hair look fabulous, but I could also melt a snow monster with it. The coffee maker would be useful here, too. My coffee making skills are non-existent, though, so really, the coffee I make would only be useful to melt a snow monster."
She paused, trying to think of something else. "Oh, and a fork. Useful for eating food and for stabbing snow monsters."
Re: Class Assignment
"First, I would grab one of my grimoires, because, if you have seen the blasted things, they are huge. Thus, I could pummel zombies in the head with it.
Second, I would use one of the many electronics in my room because zombies are usually rottong and wet and disgusting, so I could electrocute them.
Shoes. Shoes are great for beating things."
