Keeping Your Wits About You... [Monday 2nd Period 10-11] Class # 2
As the students made their way in to the classroom today, they would find a tray stacked with all sorts of breakfasty type treats and of course, coffee, tea and water for anyone who would like to have a quick bite to eat while Wilson was lecturing.
The doctor himself greeted everybody with an easy smile from where he was leaning against the desk, sipping on his own cup of coffee.
Lecture:
"Good morning," he began once everyone was settled. "Today I want to talk a little bit about the idea of survival kits. I want to focus more on the function of what you find in a standard survival kit than the idea of the kits themselves. After all, this isn't really a wilderness class."
Grinning, he walked over to an overhead projector and flipped it on. Everybody could be thankful now that he wouldn't be forcing them to read his handwriting!
"So, what is a survival kit?" He began, putting the first slide up on the projector. "Let's go over the various basics and different items you find for different situations."
He spent quite a bit of time going over the details of what was in the kit. The emphasis was not on how to make up an actual kit but the function of each of the enclosed eithers, shelter, warmth, food gathering, water gathering and how covering these needs for the body were vital in an emergency situation.
"Okay, for a few of you, keeping warm ... altering your environment to your needs is not so much of a challenge as the rest of us," Wilson said with a grin and he changed out the slide on the projector.
"This next slide, is a rather handy way to think of things, though knowing our student body I'll be the first to agree that the first one doesn't apply quite as stringently as it might to most."
S.T.O.P
S - Stop/Stay put.If you realize that you are lost, stay where you are. Wilson has obviously struck through the basic definition and added a note of his own 'For this class, think of this as simply Stop, take a deep breath and try not to react without thinking.
T - Think. Don't panic. If you panic, you will make poor decisions. Most people will make their situation worse if they panic.
O - Observe. Observe your surroundings and try to find some things that will help you out.
P - Plan. When you're thinking clearly, you can make a plan to survive.
Turning off the slide projector, he turned on the lightswake up everyone and stop making out and headed back to his desk.
Class Assignment
"For today's class assignment, I want you to pick one of the following scenarios -and yes to a few of you these will sound awfully familiar- and the challenge is this. You are caught in your dorm room when one of these emergencies occures. You're free to pick which one.
I want you to come up with three things in your dorm room that would help you handle and overcome the situation. I want you to list the three items, tell me their everyday use and then how you propose to adapt them to help you handle the chosen emergency. Any questions? Feel free to come up to see me at my desk."
The List!
1.Zombies invade the island, looking for brains.
2.The island is sunk into a deep freeze and there are snow monsters everywhere
3.There is a flood on the island and everything is rapidly sinking under water
4.The environmental controls in the school go haywire and it's 100+ degrees in your dorm room.
[ooc:Please wait for The OCDs are up!]
