When the math students entered the classroom for the first time, they would find their teacher pacing a path in front of the chalkboard. The more observant among them might notice that his feet were not quite touching the floor. Those who were paying particular attention would notice that he also seemed to be vibrating ever so slightly.

“Good morning,” he said when the last student signed in and he stopped pacing. Even the nonobservant-and-falling-asleep should notice he had a bit of an accent. “I am Jean-Paul Beaubier—you may call me Mr. Beaubier, or Professor Beaubier if you prefer--and I will be teaching you math.” The ‘God help us all,’ went unvocalized. "First, we will all introduce ourselves so I know who I am dealing with, and then, you will have half an hour to complete placement tests so I know what I am dealing with. Let's get started. First, I would like each of you to tell me your name, what year you are in, and where you are from. Starting with...you," he said, pointing to someone at random.

"I'm Alphonse Elric," he began. "I'm a junior this year, and from a small town called Risembool. Which is in another world entirely, so if you've never heard about it before that might be why." He paused, thinking if there was anything else to add before finishing. "And... I think that might be it."

"I'm Naomi Wildman," Naomi said, "I'm a sophomore and I'm most recently from San Francisco, California,"

"Hi!" Wow, the teacher was cute. That never hurt. "I'm Charlie McGee, I'm a junior, and I'm from Hastings Glen, New York. Math isn't exactly my strongest subject, but I don't hate it. And I've only been here since the beginning of this summer."

The last time, hopefully, that Adah would have to do this in a classroom, but by the end of the week, there was no hesitation or nervousness behind her taking out a sheet of paper, writing down her answer, and then raising her hand so that she might give it to the teacher.

Jean-Paul arched one eyebrow at Adah, and said, "Yes, what is it?"

Adah held up a folded piece of paper, and then held it out, with the clear intention that the teacher should take it.

With one eyebrow arched dubiously, Jean-Paul took the paper from Adah.

Written in a neat script was the information that Jean-Paul had asked for.

"My name is Adah Price; I have been placed at a senior year, and I was born in Bethlehem Georgia. Most recently, though, I have come back from Africa, and come here, apparently, from 1962."

Jean-Paul read this, then looked back down at Adah. "I see. Miss Price, is there a reason you do not speak, then?"

"I'm Peter Parker from New York City and I'm a senior but only in the school year sense," Peter said.

Jude slouched down in his chair as soon as he heard the word 'math'. Dude. Not cool. When did that happen?

"'m Jude Lizowski, I'm a junior, and I'm from Toronto. Also, sir, you're, um, floating." He was being helpful!

"I am Mizuno Ami" Ami said with a slight bow "I am a Sophamore, from Tokyo Japan."

"My name is Hermione Granger, I'm a junior, and from England," she said. "...Are you all right?"

"Yes," said Jean-Paul. "Why wouldn't I be?"

"You look a little..." Vibratey. "Shaky."

Jean-Paul shrugged. "It is normal for me. But a word of advice? Decaf still has trace amounts of caffeine in it."

If it was normal, she wasn't going to pry. "Thank you for the tip," she said, trying to be grateful.

"I'm Ronan Nolan," Ronan said, "and I'm a... junior." He hesitated over the still somewhat unfamiliar class terminology. "I'm from Ireland."

"I'm Rodney McKay and I'm a junior from Canada," he stated. "Mostly, I'm interested in Applied Mathematics."

Bart smiled brightly, waving at his floating teacher. "I'm Bart Allen and I'm from Central City and I'm a freshmen. Do we learn to do that too in this class?"

Jean-Paul frowned a little at Bart. "Learn how to do what?"

"Floating," Bart replied, pointing at Jean-Paul's feet.

"Not unless you already possess the ability, in which case I will be happy--" or at least willing --"to tutor you in flight. Otherwise, no, I can't make it happen."

This was Bart's pouty face. "No. No flying."
