Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part III

Amazingly enough, this part of the lawn looked pretty clear. For the moment, at least.

"...when? I'm from September 1996," he said slowly, beaming anyway. "Have you been playing with time turners again?"

That was almost a squeak from her. "You're actually my Harry!" she said, beaming again. "There have been so many people from Hogwarts here, and no one has ever been from the same time as me!"

Harry blinked, then remembered what Marco had told him. "Yes, I'm your Harry," he repeated slowly, grinning. "This is the school where you've been?"

He felt a twinge of resentment at Dumbledore for neglecting to mention that when they left Privet Drive, but it passed quickly.

"Yes! You're in the wrong year and half of everything here is insane, but you're here!" Hermione wasn't actually bouncing, but it was with some effort. "How was the trip? Why are you here? Is everything all right?"

"Trip was fine," he said, trying not to laugh. "Came by Portkey. Dumbledore sent me -- harder for Death Eaters to track me when I'm not even on the right continent, right?"

"No, that makes sense," she said, and to be honest she felt better having him here instead of there with Voldemort loose and her worrying. "You're here for the whole year? What about Ron?"

"He's at Hogwarts," Harry said, his grin slipping a little. "He's going to go mental over this."

"He'll be all right," Hermione said after the briefest of pauses. "He's still got Ginny there." Though this wasn't going to be the same at all.

"Right," Harry agreed, though he didn't really think so either.

"So what's this place like? My big brother said -- " He broke off, looking stricken. "Umbridge was really here?"

"She's gone now," Hermione said quickly. "And she won't be back anytime soon."

"I wasn't sure, when you called before?" Harry admitted. "I mean, someone who's never seen her before thought she was insane. And she got to be principal? Or did she have some other idiotic title? What was she even doing here, really? How'd you get rid of her? Centaurs, again?"

"She took over for Principal Washburn while she was on maternity leave. I wrote to the school board and nothing was done, and everything started again," Hermione explained. "It started with the decrees and idiotic rules, and she demanded that everyone call her Headmistress. She made announcements about how I was a very disturbed girl because I was telling people what she was really like, and then she started hexing students as punishment, and worse, and it got so bad that the teachers finally staged a coup and according to the radio, threw her into Special Collections."

Harry was surreptitiously (or so he thought) trying to look at the backs of her hands. "Special Collections?"

Figuring out what he was doing, she held out her hands to let him see. "She didn't do anything to me," she said. She'd threatened to, but this probably wasn't the place considering Hermione hadn't told anyone about that yet. "Special Collections is in the library. It's like an entirely different world back there. And probably dangerous enough to keep her occupied for a long time."

"Good," Harry said vehemently, running his thumb over the back of his own hand absently. "Did she hurt anyone? Like she did to me, or worse?"

"Are you sure you want to hear this?" Hermione asked. "You just got here."

Harry sighed, scrubbing a hand though his hair and making it stand on end. "Yes. But it can wait, I guess. What else do I need to know about this place aside from that, and that people are from space?"

"Well," she said, "there are all sorts here. People from the past, future... We've had aliens and demons here, and witches who aren't even part of what we can do. You just have to keep an open mind and realize the odds are very good that you might turn into an animal."

Harry stared. "...like an Animagus? Or like what Moody did to Malfoy? Crouch, I mean."

"Well, when Rita Skeeter was here, yes," Hermione said with an eyeroll. "But no, I mean spontaneously turning into an animal. It's happened to my roommate's boyfriend."

Harry just kind of stared. "...what? All of that, what?"

"I don't think I can explain the animal transformation any clearer than that," she said. "But- oh, I never told you about Rita, did I?"

Harry shook his head.

"She used to teach here, and turned one of the students into an animal repeatedly," Hermione told him. "I only saw her once, right before she left the school and I haven't heard a word about her since."

"Good. She was kind of useful last year. Must not have been ours," that was still so weird, "the one that was here."
