Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part III

Amazingly enough, this part of the lawn looked pretty clear. For the moment, at least.

Sam scowled and held onto Grace tighter, in no way willing to let her go now that he'd managed to safely hold onto her for so long. "Or she could end up wanting to be chaste. That was my plan until I met you. If she doesn't meet someone like you, then she may never date. And she likes Dean more because if she's crying, she stops when he picks her up, and she doesn't do that with me."

"What do you mean, someone like me?" Dawn glared at him, but had stopped tugging on Grace.

"Someone who she ends up falling in love with and wanting to be with in a serious way," Sam said quickly. "I didn't mean that in a bad way, honest."

"Better," she told him, smiling, then fidgeting, "but if I'd known you didn't want to...I would have stayed away. I...yeah."

"I did want to though," Sam insisted. "I just didn't expect to want to, not until you came along."

"Can I hold her?" Dawn asked hopefully, holding her arms out, "and I didn't exactly expect to--y'know, completely--until you came along either. But that doesn't mean we didn't go ahead. She might too."

Especially if she ended up going to school in Fandom.

Sam hesitated for just a moment before carefully handing Grace to Dawn. "Make sure you hold her right," he said. "If she manages to meet someone who really cares about her, Dean and I might not scare him away. But I make no guarantees."

Dawn cradled Grace very, very gently against her shoulder, being careful to support her head with her hand. "She's so little," Dawn breathed, not wanting to disturb her, "and you guys are way biased."

Okay, Sam understood why Dawn had been so enamored by the idea of him holding Grace, now that he was seeing it the other way around. "I know. Now you know why I was afraid I'd drop her. She's getting bigger every day but she's still so tiny. And Dean and I are allowed to be biased."

"She's a little wiggly. That's why you have Alec and I," Dawn whispered to the baby, but loud enough for Sam to hear. Grace, for her part, had curled in so her ear was right over Dawn's heart and didn't seem to be concerned one way or the other. "We'll make sure you're not a nun unless you want to be."
