Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part III

Amazingly enough, this part of the lawn looked pretty clear. For the moment, at least.

"Yeah," Demyx admitted sheepishly. "Someone I used to know really well. But I screwed a lot of stuff up really bad at the beginning of the summer, so I've spent most of the past few months hiding. And writing, of course, because I really was doing that too." He still hadn't lost the habit of talking with his hands, and he flailed a little harder now. "But anyway, yeah, other topics!"

"Like what?" asked Anders, smiling slightly, because the flailing was amusing. "What've you been writing?"

"Music," Demyx replied promptly, latching onto the safe subject. He sat down by Anders, completely disregarding the social nicety of asking permission before doing so. "I just kinda got inspired, you know? I think I forgot to go to classes a few times because of it, but it's all worth it for the music." He nodded sagely, as if this was an undeniable fact.

A brief look of uncertainty crossed Anders's face, but to his credit he didn't try to scoot away. "I've been like that with a few things myself, yeah. Not the music so much, but I get the general concept."

There was nothing behind the sitting by him; it was more of a casual, friendly gesture because Demyx didn't like standing over Anders and looking down at him. "Yeah. I guess that's what happens when you're really passionate about something." Demyx paused, then added, "Can someone feel passionate if they don't have a heart? That's something that's kinda been bugging me lately."

Anders would have appreciated that, if he knew.

He bit his lip and picked up his Pyramid ball, turning it absently between his fingers as he thought about the question. "Well . . . getting so lost in something that you forget everything else . . . if that's not passion I don't know what is, really."

"I guess so. It's just really confusing sometimes." Demyx sighed, frustrated. "Oh, hey, isn't that for that sport?" he asked, jumping topics easily. "The one that you really like that I can't remember the name of?" Demyx frowned, scratching his head. "What was it again?" He gave up after a moment, ruffling his hair in frustration. "Argh, I totally don't remember!"

"Pyramid," Anders said with a slight smile. "It's okay if you don't remember it, you know. You don't have it where you're from."

"Yeah, I know, but I never remember stuff and I always feel stupid when it happens," Demyx admitted sheepishly. "It feels like I give off the impression like I haven't been paying attention, you know?"

"If you say so," Demyx said, giving in easily. "So I know it's complicated and all, but can I help even a little with whatever's got you so down?" It was hard seeing Anders like this. Even if he hadn't been ADHD like Demyx, he just seemed so...sad.

"Maybe?" Anders tugged at an unraveling bit of thread on his Pyramid ball and frowned, then glanced sidelong at Demyx, hoping he wasn't going to open any old wounds with what he said. "Bel and Phoebe . . . they had to leave last night. Hurts like hell and I miss them."

Demyx winced in sympathy, nodding. He did have experience in missing people who weren't around. "Yeah, that definitely falls under the complicated category. As cliché as it is, I do, kinda, know how you feel. It's really hard, especially at first, but they're still there, right? You can visit?"

"Whenever I want, they said, and it's not like I can't have him shimmer to get me or anything." Anders shrugged again, a little of his droopiness returning. "It's the getting used to them not being here that sucks."

"At the risk of sounding completely heartless," Demyx said, smirking slightly at the irony of the statement before getting serious again. "You do get used to it after a while. If I can get through it, I know you can. I'm really weak."

"Yeah, um." Anders swallowed and looked away for a moment, then glanced at Demyx before staring intently at his hands. "I'm . . . did I ever tell you I was sorry about that?"

"...Huh?" Demyx blinked at him dumbly, then the lightbulb switched on. "Oh! That. No, but it's really okay. I mean, it really sucked for a while, but I can't really blame you for anything, and it probably worked out in a good way. You're happy, right?" He smiled at Anders to prove there really were no hard feelings. "If there's anything I know, it's when to give up and run. I really don't regret what happened with us. Not that I'd want it to happen again or anything, but I'm glad you found what's right for you and all that." He stopped suddenly and looked sheepish. "Sorry. I talk too much."

"I was a jerk about it at the time, though." Anders fidgeted slightly. "I'm really sorry. It's just . . . he wasn't himself then, and he would've killed you if I hadn't, and he would've killed me if I'd let on what was happening."

He paused, then managed a smile in return. "Seriously? You're okay about all of this?"

"You were," Demyx admitted. "But you had a reason, and I'm glad nobody got killed. Especially me, because I've been there, I've done that, and it really sucks." He extended his hand to Anders, tilting his head to the side slightly. "Can we still be friends and hang out and talk and stuff?" he asked hopefully.

Anders reached out to shake his hand. "I could use all the friends I can get," he said honestly. "Especially since I've sort of been neglecting everybody the past few months. So yeah. Definitely."

"Me, too," Demyx agreed. He hopped to his feet, brushing grass off his coat. "So don't look so down, okay?" he asked, smiling. "You aren't totally alone."

"Thanks, Demyx," Anders told him, smiling back for real this time. "That really does help, you know. By the way, I'm down the hall from where I used to be, now, in 227. You know, if you need to find me for whatever reason."

"227. Got it." Demyx pulled out a notepad and pen, scribbling furiously. "I won't forget," he promised. "I'm still in 517, too. You can always stop by if you feel like it, even if the door's shut."
