Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

Zoe was very impressed with how well the construction people had done in rebuilding the school, and the grounds had been cleared just in time for the picnic to welcome the new students and teachers. Tables and chairs had been set up, and there was plenty of food and drinks, along with nametags, and two signs, one listing the Big Sibling/Little Sibling pairings, and another listing rooms and roommates for the new students.

[~~WAIT FOR THE OCD PLEASE.~~ OCD IS UP. This is part one of the picnic, for specifically meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. Part two is happening simultaneously here, in an effort to keep browsers from breaking for as long as possible. *g*]

"Better not," Jeff said, pulling himself back into some semblance of together, "Wouldn't want to run any risks."

He fiddled with the sign in his hands a little more. Still didn't really know what to do with any of this. "Not to say I think you're infectious or anything," he hastened to add, "It's just sometimes hugging gets sort of contagious, in a... bad... way. Before you know it, you've got a-- well, better not say it out loud, it may come true."

... infectious? ... contagious?

Ino really didn't want to know what he was talking about but the question slipped out before she could stop it, and she asked in an incredulous voice, "How can hugging be contagious?"

"Well, you know," Jeff said, making clumsy hand gestures, "You start hugging and it sort of... gets out of hand."

Oh. Oh! Ino went pink and looked away when she realized what he was talking about.

"Not that it always happens!" Jeff was grasping for whatever strands of sensical narrative he could find, which at this point amoutned mostly to what words he could find to string together. "You know, there's just risks, and I wouldn't want to take them, it may not be prudent by the sibling code."

"That's good," Ino said, still blushing, "And yeah, that's totally not right with the sibling code."

She groped around for a new topice, one that wasn't so embarrassing, "Why are you at Fandom? Dad let me go because someone was a total jerk and left me behind because 'I wasn't strong enough'."

"Exactly!" Okay, slightly desperate there, but at least they were now away from difficult topics.

"My mother sent me," Jeff replied, looking twenty kinds of extra deflated, "She felt I wasn't concerned enough with appropriate behaviour." He paused. "Don't go near the sewer."

Ino looked around automatically, "What sewer?" She didn't see anything that looked even remotely like a sewer.

Was this another thing like the hugging? Did she really want to know?

"When I got here for the first time," Jeff explained, patiently, "I had a bit of a phoning accident while I was on the toilet. I ended up in the sewer for a few days, for a while I thought I'd lost the ability to comprehend the English language forever. In the end I got out, though. If you do fall in the sewer and you meet this singing crab..."

Okay, so it was weirder than the hugging thing. She'd asked though, so Ino figured that she deserved the crazy.

"What should I do if I ever met a singing crab? How does a phoning accident land you in the sewer?"

"Sorry," Jeff said, doing his best to crawl back to the conversation as well as he could, "You know what it's like with sewers and phones and crabs, it all gets a bit mixed up and before you know it you're a sewer monster."

A... sewer monster..? And somehow phones and crabs were connected?

"Look," Ino said after a few seconds, having decided that she really didn't want to know, "Is there anything else we can talk about? What's the school like?"

"Oh, you know, the usual," Jeff said, dismissively, "Classes, dinosaur invasions, really large dogs, the odd soundtrack day..."

"What's a dinosaur?" Ino asked immediately, and then, "What's wrong with this school?"

"Oh, you know. Very large lizard, big jaws, they like to stomp a bit. My roommate was going to go out and fight one but he got sneezed on, and I was going to go and see them but my dog kept on biting me."

Jeff paused, blinking.

"It's a perfectly ordinary school," he said.

"I've never heard of dinosaur's before." Ino said faintly. What had her dad sent her into?

Was this what he'd meant when he'd said it would help her get stronger?

"It's not like any school I've ever been to!"

Alright, so she'd only been to the Ninja Academy and Ino had just a vague idea that civilans didn't usually spend the days learning how to kill things, or lie, or... anything interesting really.

This couldn't be normal though.

"Now you have!" Jeff said, spreading his arms and grinning a big grin. He was trying! "Welcome to Fandom!"

Jeff's definitions of 'normal' may have been slightly askew in comparison to other people's.

"I suppose I have, haven't I?" Ino said with a grin starting to tug at her lips. Her big brother was an odd one, but it was kinda sweet how hard he was trying, "Thanks for making me welcome!"

"Is there anything I should be careful of?"

If there were random dinosaur invasions then Ino figured she might want to know a bit more.

"No problem!" He was practically exploding with the excitement of getting something right.

Then Jeff paused. Became serious, even. "Just the usual," he said, mildly, "Phones, closets, nudity."

Aww... that was even cuter.

Ino nodded sharply, trying not to laugh even though she was fairly sure that those things were only hazardous to him, "I'll make sure to be careful around them."

It was a small thing to promise her big brother.
