Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

Zoe was very impressed with how well the construction people had done in rebuilding the school, and the grounds had been cleared just in time for the picnic to welcome the new students and teachers. Tables and chairs had been set up, and there was plenty of food and drinks, along with nametags, and two signs, one listing the Big Sibling/Little Sibling pairings, and another listing rooms and roommates for the new students.

[~~WAIT FOR THE OCD PLEASE.~~ OCD IS UP. This is part one of the picnic, for specifically meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. Part two is happening simultaneously here, in an effort to keep browsers from breaking for as long as possible. *g*]

Bo scowled down at his nametag and scratched out 'Beauregard', replacing it with the friendlier 'Bo'. Then he resumed kicking at an innocent rock and looking generally sulky.

The longer version of his name was still clear enough in his mind. River walked up to him, extended her hand and smiled. "Beauregard Duke? I am River Tam., your assigned older sibling."

Bo blinked a couple of times before taking her hand delicately. "Howdy, Miss Tam." The honorific was kind of automatic when someone broke out the 'Beauregard'.

"I can call you Bo," she offered. "From Hazzard County, Georgia, Earth. I am from 500 years into the future, different solar system, planet Osiris." She still smiled, hoping it would make him feel more at ease.

Kinda did the exact opposite really. He wanted to take a bit step in the other direction. Deciding that it was some kind of joke, he smiled weakly back.

"Not a joke," River tried to explain, turning serious. "When I first arrived I had doubts about the existence of magic, but I have had to revise my opinion."

You'll have to forgive Bo. He's not really the bright one in the family. That's Luke. Luke does the planning, Daisy does the distracting, Bo does the driving.

A nervous kind of smile broke over his boyish face. "You're kiddin' me."

River looked hurt. "Am not." Her shoulders slumped somewhat.

Ack! Unhappy female alert! Bo took a jerky step forward, hands coming up as if to console her somehow. "Sorry, Miz Tam," he said quickly. "I mean, I'd get it if it was some kinda new-kid hazing or something . . ."

River stared at him, wide-eyed, shaking her head. "It's not! Am trying to give you a helpful first impression of Fandom and introduce myself."

"Okay." Bo ran a hand through his hair as he tried to figure his way through this. "You're . . . from the future?" Let's start there.

She nodded slowly. "Future. Different solar system. I have a spaceship." She added that last part in the hope that it would interest him.

"A spaceship," he repeated, doubtfully.

. . . although could you imagine driving one of them?

"I can take you flying once I find some fuel," Rive offered cheerfully.

"Anything like driving?" he said hopefully, his mind full of thoughts of his beloved General Lee.

"Driving with added dimensions," River replied, looking a little proud. "More complex than a car."

Now this was starting to sound interesting. "Can y' race 'em?"

River's smile widened into a grin. "Need two for that."
