Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

Zoe was very impressed with how well the construction people had done in rebuilding the school, and the grounds had been cleared just in time for the picnic to welcome the new students and teachers. Tables and chairs had been set up, and there was plenty of food and drinks, along with nametags, and two signs, one listing the Big Sibling/Little Sibling pairings, and another listing rooms and roommates for the new students.

[WAIT FOR THE OCD PLEASE. OCD IS UP. This is part one of the picnic, for specifically meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. Part two is happening simultaneously here, in an effort to keep browsers from breaking for as long as possible. *g*]

Hoshi put on her nametag, then started looking around for a Sam Winchester.

It never got less awkward to walk around and look at everyone's chests to try to find the right person, but luckily, Sam's search didn't take too long this time. "Hoshi?" he said cautiously. "Hi, I'm Sam."

"Hi," said Hoshi, feeling a little shy. For a budding linguist, she was not really used to talking to people.

The shyness just made Sam smile more. "Hi. It's nice to meet you. Did you have any trouble getting here?"

"No, it was just a short flight from Kyoto," said Hoshi. "The shuttlepod just dropped me off a little while ago and Mr. Daniels gave me directions from there."

"So, you're from Japan?" Sam asked, letting the shuttlepod part go for the moment. "That's awesome."

It took Hoshi a little while to figure out how to keep the conversation going. Thank goodness for that tutor who insisted on starting with basic conversational English. "Where are you from?" she asked politely.

"I was born in Kansas, but I moved around a lot with my dad and my brother. I've never been out of the U.S. though," he admitted. "But I'd really like to see the rest of the world some day."

Hoshi nodded. That explained why his speech patterns were all over the place. "There is so much out there to see," she said. "I've always wanted to go to Bozeman, Montana, to see where First Contact with the Vulcans took place. I'd like to go to San Francisco, too, and see where they're building the new Warp 5 engine."

One of these days, Sam was going to get a sibling who was close to normal, but today was clearly not that day. "What are Vulcans?" he asked.

Hoshi blinked. Everyone knew the Vulcans. She even had a Vulcan tutor for a few years. "Umm, the people from off-world with the green skin and pointy ears?" she said.

Sam looked a little nervous as he tried to figure out how to phrase this. "Okay, the first piece of wisdom I can impart to you is that this place is kind of crazy. There are a lot of people here from a lot of different places, and not all of them have Vulcans, or other things you're familiar with for that matter."

"Oh," said Hoshi, puzzled. "So there's no Vulcans here? Too bad. I was just starting to learn Vulcan too."

"No, but there might be other people who know Vulcans. You'll have to ask though," he said, wondering how well that would work out. "Do you like languages?"

Re: Meet Your Big/Little Sibling

[identity profile] itsjustlanguage.livejournal.com 2007-09-01 06:02 pm (UTC)(link)
"Yes," said Hoshi with a big smile on her face. "My tutors said that I can learn new languages a lot faster than most people. I speak English, Japanese, French, Spanish, Russian, Italian, Czech..."

She's not showing off, really. But when you're on pace to learn 40 different languages by age 22, it's going to be a really long list.

Sam gaped, clearly impressed. "Wow, I--whoa. You could be very popular around here with language skills like that. I know Latin, and I'm familiar with a few others, but I still need dictionaries for most of the translating. Do you want to be some kind of translator when you're done with school?"

"It's not that bad when you can understand that tehre's a basic underlying structure to all languages. Even math is just a language," said Hoshi. "I'd like to be a translator, but I think eventually I could come up with a way of automating translations from one language."
