Flight and Flying [Thursday, August 16, 3rd period]

When the flight workshop arrived at the shed, they found it locked up tight and Anakin leaning up against it.

His hands were crossed and tucked up under his robes, but that wasn't particularly unusual. Neither was the pinched, worried look around his eyes.

"Today we fly helicopters, which are waiting over at Selkie Cove" he said, voice as steady as always. "If you happen to buzz them too close to That Woman's office, well, too bad for her." He made eye contact with each student. "I graduated from this school, too, so I know that this will probably be ignored, but...the teachers are here to look after you. You know better by now than to touch live electrical cables or set yourself on fire. Our temporary...whoever...falls into the same category. Nothing is making you go into her office. So don't do it."

He lowered his voice. "Please."

He shrugged. "Plea made. Moving on. Because I can occasionally be strange, you have to wear these fetching hats as you practice your maneuvers in the helicopters. And no, you can't whine your way out of it."

Johnny felt much more anxious than usual upon seeing that they were going to be flying real helicopters instead of holographic ones. Despite being four weeks into the course, he still wasn't completely comfortable with having to think about driving in three dimensions instead of two. He brought the helicopter up, but kept casting anxious glances back at Anakin to see if he was doing it right.

He brought the helicopter up off the ground, and it lurched madly towards the school before he was able to bring it under control. Johnny kept the machine closer to the ground than he had with the airplanes from the previous weeks. Part of him was worried that he was going to crash in a way that he hadn't felt since his Dad started teaching him how to ride a motorcycle when he was a kid, and keeping it from going to high meant that the crash would be less painful.

The propeller on his beanie kept spinning around with the force of moving the machine, which he had to admit was distracting him from the controls.

"This really necessary?" he asked. "Wouldn't a helmet or somethin' be better?"

River inspected the strange hat, wondering if Irulan would approve of it. Finally she shrugged and placed it on her head.

Flying the helicopter quickly caught her attention however, and she managed to make a few manuoevres that had the pilot look slightly worried.

Irulan, indeed liked the hats, in fact she was wearing the checkered hat.

Rogue was actually excited about this lesson. First of all, a helicopter wasn't a plane. Second, after her talk with Anakin, she was feeling more confident in her abilities.

Adam was a tiny bit nervous about flying out in the open and not in a simulator, but he had a feeling he could do it.

Plus, he was excited for this lesson. The excitement definitely outweighed his anxiety.

Anemone payed close attention during the instruction, since she had never seen anything like a heli-copter thing before.

Grinning, she placed the hat on head and flicked the propeller so it would spin. Yay!

Taking the machine off the ground was simple enough, it was the adjusting for the vibrations that was forcing her to concentrate rather than take the aircraft for a joyride.

Sam was definitely nervous about flying outside of a simulation, but some of his nerves went away as he took the helicopter up and realized just how much he'd picked up over the past weeks.

And the dorkiness of the hats helped a little too.

Rikku bounced. A lot. And wore the hat, and spun the beanie around and around and around.

And while waiting for her turn, began singing "Cuban Pete."

A lot.

Anemone blinked at the bouncing blonde girl, and started giggling.

"That? Is the most brilliant song ever. Can you teach me the words?" Nope, she's not planning revenge on John Connor for teaching her about 80s music at all. Nope. Nada.

Irulan had no qualms about the hat and wore the checkered one quite proudly.

Qui-Gon put on the hat without complaint; after years wearing the padawan haircut it didn't really seem that bad.

The actual flying went pretty well too.

Rory was there with cookies, happily (or appearing as much) in a hat of her own.

There was something about the aura around Anakin today that combined with how entirely the man was shielding made Qui-Gon worry. So he waited to the end of the class and then tentatively ventured, "Excuse me Master Anakin, but is there something wrong?"
