Spies and Spying: Week 6. Period 1

Aly stood in front of the class looking thoughtful as they came in. 

"Over the past five classes, we've talked a lot about different ways to get information," she said.  "But we've never talked about what to do once you have the information.  In general, that's not the spy's job.  The spy simply retrieves the information and passes it up the chain of command.  It's the spymaster or the officer or the politician's job.  But things are rarely that easy, and none of you are actually spies."  She grinned.  "That I know of."

"So how do you know when to act?  How do you know when to act wisely?  When the goal is revolution, the object should only rarely be to just taunt the person in power or draw his attention to you.  You need a plan.  You need a clear objective, and you need to make sure you have as much information as possible before you act."

She raised an eyebrow.  "So take...oh, whatever possibility you wish to discuss and form a plan of action.  Decide what information you need, and how - using the techniques we've talked about - you'd go about getting it."

"It's one thing to kiss in public and stay out past curfew, and another entirely to catch her attention by insulting her on the radio," she replied.

Never mind that Aravis had absolutely no qualms about possibly charging into Umbridge's office herself.

"It all ends up on the radio anyway," Seely murmured. "I was just editorialising."

"That's what made her mad before, isn't it?" she replied.

Seely attempted to pull her into a hug. "I'll be okay."

"You don't like me going in and provoking her, do you?" she asked, leaning into the hug but not quite reciprocating.

Seely nuzzled her shoulder. "No, I don't."

"Well, I don't like it either. Not that I don't think you're very brave and all, but honestly."

Seely had a very small grin on his face. "You think I'm brave?"

"Yes. And lacking sense," she said, shaking her head. "You're poking at the beast when you've seen its claws. That's either brave or entirely stupid. I choose to believe it's a combination, in your case."

"But if she's swatting at me, she can't go after other people," Seely said softly.

"I won't let her hit me," Seely promised.

Aravis gave him a flat look. "She's not actually laid a hand on either of us and you know that wasn't what I meant."

"She'd have to catch me first," Seely pointed out.

She smiled a little. "I just don't think we should be provoking her," she replied. "No, wait, I don't think you should. She still doesn't even know my name."

"I'd not planned on it," she assured him. "Though really with that ridiculous new title of hers, the temptation is there to make her use mine."

"No, but making her address me as Lady Aravis would bring me a fair amount of satisfaction," she sighed.
